NEXT MEETING
The next meeting is on Monday 18th September @ 8pm.
FAMOUS FOR FIVE MINUTES
With the vast majority of our members on the web, one thing is surprising, the relatively few of us who have created our own websites. For sure we have the grand-daddy of them all, the Glencom website. It has received thousands of hits from all around the world, but we have still only got a handful of members websites.
The Dark Ages
Back in the dark ages of four or five years ago websites had to be hand-crafted out of raw HTML, but this is no longer the case. There are many excellent, free WYSIWYG web editors. This newsletter for instance has been created with one, FrontPage Express which comes free with IE5. It will even FTP your pages up to your webspace. On a recent visit to Tucows we found over fifty freeware and shareware HTML editors available for download.
I Couldn't do that.
An friend recently created a site on Freeserve called
Aquaworld. The site is dedicated to his hobby, scuba diving. He specialises in diving on shipwrecks, and is off in a few times to Orkney Island's for a weeks diving the wrecks in Scapa Flow.
The site doesn't rely of flashy graphics for effect, it is the uniqueness of it's content which attracts interest. A few days ago it was mentioned in
The Times
So ladies & gents, the message is clear, create a site which is different from the rest and you too will have your five minutes of fame. G

SMS - SHORT MESSAGING SERVICE - UPDATE
This is a service by which you can send messages up to 180 characters to any SMS mobile phone from your PC. Most GSM phones have this capability. Why send a message rather than ring the number? Try contacting someone who is either out of range or simply does not have his/her phone switched on! Maybe he/she is recharging it. Just leave a short message and he/she will get it next time they switch on, up to 17 days later.
SMSMaster
Check out
SMSMaster - this is a shareware version with full support for Cellnet, Vodafone and BT pagers and other UK networks. You will first have to configure it for the service and add prefixes if not available already.
What does it cost?
Cost 10p + your local phone call only. Up to 120 characters allowed in this shareware version. You only have to know the number of the mobile you wish to contact. Of course if you come to the next meeting you may even obtain this program directly.
The registered version is only £10. from GCRSOFT Latest Version 2.12 now available.

BT's Free Short Message Service - Genie
As we were going to press we received word of a new free service from BT called Genie.
Genie Internet is the comprehensive free web service that delivers information direct to mobile phones. Genie Internet users can use this form to send a Text Message to any UK digital mobile phone.G

MAGIC SQUARES - THE ANSWER
Last edition we posed the problem of creating a 3 by 3 magic square. The challenge was to write the numbers 1 to 9, one in each square such that vertically, horizontally and diagonally they all add up the same number.

Appendex
See the appendix at the end of this newsletter for a simple Delphi program for creating much larger magic squares.

CABLE & WIRELESS
How to join C&W
It is only necessary to phone C/W give your phone no, and you are on. No initial charge and no change of phone no. To use the service dial 131 and then the No. that's it.

Quarterly Charge

There is a Quartely charge of £3.71 (inc Vat all costings from now on include Vat) However there is a credit of 100 mins per month value £1.37 this in effect wipes out the membership fee and leaves you with a very small credit (all of 12p per month still better than a slap on the belly with a wet fish)

Cost Breakdown
My calcuations have been based on a total of 604 mins
Of these Weekend was 294 @ £2.45 = .00826 per min.
Weekday                     307 @ £4.52 = .10147
a small amount of time was before 6pm seemed to cost about .04 after 6pm .1047
C/W say if you dont save money (against BT) they will credityou with double the difference. They offer to do a cost comparison against BT, send photocopy of paid bill to

PEARLS OF WISDOM
The sixth deadly sin is to equate the unlikely with the impossible.
TANDY RULES
The Phoenix Arises.
Tuesday night October 5 saw the Tandy club rise from the ashes and establish a small foothold in a new home. Our good friend Mr Ken Patterson who recently moved house has kindly offered the use of one of his many out building which I am assured is very modern and well laid outthe said . On night a limited number of members attendedI think to see if things suited them rather than , more Ken seeing if it really suited him to host the meeting. The meeting was brought to order and the rebirth was celebrated with a bottle of cherry brandy (cheap wine) after which it was agreed to hold a meeting on the month.
first Tuesday of each Two Meeting Places
The general feelings of those attending were that the facilities more than met their expectations and they were very impressed indeed. At this time it is not yet clear if it will be open house (should really say open clubnumbers will be limited. This would of course double members chances of ) or if attending a meeting each month and it is to be hoped that they will avail of the opportunity. Two meeting places and Onelist every member the opportunity to keep in (now that’s another story) give touch and no one should sit and ponder alone over their problems no matter how trivial they may seemto be a website?. If so it has to be better than Gle****! what’s . This raises a question: Is there the name of that other lotexpressed to Ken from all members for this kind ?. Many Thanks are invitation.

VIRUS WATCH
With all the talk of viruses on the Glencom OneList, we thought you might like to know about what's gonna happen to your PC on 13th December.
Virus Characteristics
This is a virus that infects Word 97 documents. The virus consists of a module called ThisDocument. It will infect Word's normal.dot file. When it infects it turns the Word 97 Macro Warning feature off.
On the 13th of December when an infected document is opened the virus will attempt to delete ALL files on drive C: (including subdirectories).
Aliases
Thus.a, W97M/Thursday This virus does not use e-mail to spread itself but can be spread via e-mail in a word document as an attachment. Only open attachments from known sources. The virus is very dangerous as it deletes all files on the C drive of your PC. If you store important files on your C drive always back them up G
