| ELVIS & PRESIDENT CARTER ARE COUSINS | |||||||||
| Elvis Presley would have
turned 65 this weekend. Many radio stations are paying tribute to "the
King" and I have seen all sorts of articles about him in print this week,
too.In one note of interest, the RootsWeb Review (http://www.rootsweb.com) points out that
"the King" was related to a president. It seems that Elvis Presley and
former President Jimmy Carter share a 17th-century German ancestor who
might make them sixth cousins once removed.RootsWeb Review says that the
findings were first published in "More Palantine Families" in 1991 by
Henry Z. Jones. Another book, "Notable Kin, Volume Two" by Gary Boyd
Roberts, agrees. According to these experts, the immigrant ancestor of
Presley's paternal line was Valentine Preslar, born in Germany around
1669, who immigrated to New York with his wife, Anna Christina Framse, in 1709. Among their three sons and two daughters was Andreas Preslar, who was born in Germany in 1701 and died in Anson County, North Carolina in 1759. Rootsweb FamilyTreeMaker.com claims that there are 85 million names (100,000+ GEDCOMs) uploaded to its World Family Tree. Kindred Konnections claims that there are 43 million names uploaded to its Ancestral Archive. However, to access these names, you must either buy a subscription or a CD. Users who cannot or will not pay to access your GEDCOM will not make a connection with you and, when you upload a GEDCOM to these projects, you lose control of your data.In contrast, you can revise or remove your GEDCOM on RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project at any time and RootsWeb will never burn it onto a CD or charge others to access it. In addition, RootsWeb is the largest traffic genealogy community on the Web. Researchers will FIND your GEDCOM at RootsWeb. | JUPITERS MOONS ARE 390 YEARS OLD | |||||||||
| -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Discovery of the Galilean Satellites This month marks the 390th anniversary of the
discovery of the moons of Probably the most significent contribution that Galileo
Galilei made to science was the discovery of the four satellites around
Jupiter that are now named in his honor. Galileo first observed the moons
of Jupiter on January 7, 1610 through a homemade telescope. He originally
thought he saw three stars near Jupiter, strung out in a line through the
planet. The next evening, these stars seemed to have moved the wrong way,
which caught his attention. Galileo continued to observe the stars and
Jupiter for the next week. On January 11, a fourth star (which would later
turn out to be Ganymede) appeared. After a week, Galileo had observed that
the four stars never left the vicinity of Jupiter and appeared to be
carried along with the planet, and that they changed their position with
respect to each other and Jupiter. Finally, Galileo determined that what
he was observing were not stars, but planetary bodies that were in orbit
around Jupiter. This discovery provided evidence in support of the
Copernican system and showed that everything did not revolve around the
Earth. | |||||||||
