News
10th of September, 2005: Just a brief note - despite the long gap since the last news update. The band have a gig tomorrow at the Bramley Apple pub in Southwell. The first meeting since the summer break. I am not sure how much they will play or talk! Since the last time they were together Dave has been to New Zealand and France, Ronan and Patrick have been across to Ireland.William did manage a short trip to Prague earlier in the year, but his claim to an exciting summer is likely to revolve around seeing Patti Smith play in Leicester - not sure how it will rate with when he saw Tom Waits last year, or the prospect of seeing Dylan when he comes to Nottingham later this year. Any way, enough of that for now. I hope to speak to the band on Sunday and I will see what their plans are. Abrasha
19th of February, 2005:
I managed to grab a drink with the band last Tuesday while they were knocking off the rust from not having played together since before Christmas. They seemed in good spirits, especially Patrick, who has just moved to a new school nearer to his home. They were hoping that a few more gigs would start coming in – well the Horse & Groom must have heard them and have booked them for April and June. At the moment they were all glad to get together and run through some of their old favourites. They gave me a brief glimpse at some of the new materials and ideas they were hoping to work on – all I can say is that you wont be disappointed. Their e-mail to me last week gave a good report of the gig last Sunday at the Victoria Hotel in Beeston. If you haven't been there, then it's worth a visit for the beer, wine and food – of course the best way to see the evening out is then to listen to the band, so plan a night out next time they are down there. Or better still, check out the Gig list and see where and when you can next see them; or if you want to be alerted to gigs as they come up, then send an e-mail to the band and register on their e-mail list - fieldwork@fieldworkfolk.com. Abrasha8th of January, 2005:
Happy New Year to everyone. A big thank you from the band to all those people who turned out to see them play last year. There are some gigs now on the list for 2005 - check them out. The first is at the Victoria in Beeston. There is also the chance to see chance to see Dave and Patrick playing as a duo at the Gladstone – re-living their student days down at Kent University where they first met and played together!
Don’t forget to join the mailing group if you have not already.

26th of October, 2004:
The band appreciated the turn out at the Bell - a good gig all round. Check out the gig list for the November date for the Horse and Groom and an early December date for a first time visit to Bunkers Hill, (situated at the bottom of Hockley). There is also a Ceilidh in November at St. John's Community Hall, Watcomb Circus , Carrington. The dance is a fundraising event for Paviors RFC Girls Rugby team, ('a wild and scary bunch of scrum-capped vixens in red and green'), who are organising a rugby tour to Holland next easter - tickets are £5.00 (adult) and £10.00 (family) - tickest can be obtained via the band's e-mail address. The music will be by The Stony Hill Ceilidh Band and dances will be called by the incomparable Mr. Dave Outhwaite. Fieldwork will be playing a short set as well. The band are also hoping to play a RESPECT gig in November, but the date is unconfirmed at the moment, but if it happens it will be on a Tuesday towards the end of the month - if you haven't already, then join the mailing list and remove any fears of missing confirmation of these vital dates!
Things are fairly quite at the moment, but when I last checked in on one of the bands practices they were working on some new material and talking about recoding some more tracks. This was very much as they had previously said they were thinking of working - keep the creative juices working, rather than the big effort of a full length CD. If you haven't seen there recent multi-media CD, then take a look and feedback what you think.

I hope you have all had a good summer break. It's been a long time since the last update. Dave has been keeping people up to date via his e-mail list, (if you want to join it then let him know via fieldwork@fieldworkfolk.com ). There have been a few gigs. The Bramley Apple at Southwell went well last week - if you haven't been then it's worth a visit, even if they are not playing! There is another gig this weekend at the Bell Inn in Nottingham. Now if you see them at the Bell you will be able to get hold of their new CD! This is the band's first multimedia release! The CD consists of five audio and five video tracks which are playable on your sterio system or via the movie player on your computer - why not check out the details ==> Five Eyes . The cost is £5 from the band at gigs, or £6 by post, (send your request via the e-mail contact above). When you get a copy why not drop the band a line to let them know what you think about it - that way you might influence the next release!

25th of april:
The other week Ronan and Dave popped along to Radio Nottingham, where they conversed in very amicable fashion with Alan Clifford. The programme was broadcast live and featured recently-mixed versions of two new Fieldwork recordings, (the song 'Green Man' and instrumental set 'Ross Gibson's). The lads chatted about the songs, chuntered about the folk scene and advertised Fieldwork as much as possible, expecially the gig in The Bell Inn, Old market Square, Nottingham, on Thursday 29th of April - a first time in a famous city-centre landmark that used to be renowned for its Jazz. The band have been asked recently about city-centre venues and you cannot get much more central than the Bell! So come along and support them.
There are some new gigs for June and July, (check out the Gig list), but May has been set aside for the finishing off of some recording, including another new song 'Stony Hill' - all going towards a new mini CD due out this summer. I'll let you know how they are getting along with the recording next month.

26th of february:
After their little jaunt up to Yorkshire
('good gigs, bloody cold' seemed to be the lads' general impression
of the trip) they're back at the ranch in fine form, apart from
Dave who has somehow contrived, upon his return, to partially
disfigure himself during a six-a-side football match by falling
face-first onto astroturf under a heavy challenge. He is, as I speak,
glumly tuning the mbira whilst Ronan rubs metaphorical salt into his
wounds by suggesting he should take up a 'real man's game like rugby
or Gaelic football'. This Sunday (Feb 29th) the boys will be hauling
the harmonium over to The Golden Fleece on Mansfield Road,
Nottingham, where they haven't appeared for a good while ('over a
year', William confirms). Kick-off (sorry, Dave !) is 8.30pm. Another
gig that has been recently advertised on radio and in the press is
Fri 5th March at The Horse & Groom in Nottingham. This date has
now been postponed (by the venue) and is rearranged for June.
Apologies for any inconvenience - we only just found out ourselves
when Patrick took some posters in to the pub a few nights ago. Two
other local dates - one in March is on Sunday 14th at The Victoria,
Beeston, the other is on Sunday the 18th of April at the Bramley
Apple in Southwell - hope to see some of you at one of these.
Best
wishes from The Fugitives From The Law Of Averages.

18th of January:
A belated "Happy New Year" to everyone, especially to those who didn't manage to catch the band at the Bramely Apple in Southwell at the start of January, or the other week at the Victoria Hotel. But don't worry if you did miss them, there are a number of gigs around Nottingham during the first quarter, including another visit to the Victoria Hotel in March. If Beeston is too far out of the way, then the Golden Fleece and the Horse & Groom play host to the band in February and March - see the Gigs page for full details. If you want the latest news and a reminder about imminent gigs, then why not get your e-mail address added to the mailing list, just send your request via e-mail to fieldwork@fieldworkfolk.com.
February sees Fieldwork playing a couple of Yorkshire venues. The first is at the Black Swan Folk Club in York, which Fieldwork have fond memories of playing at when Tim Garland and then Mic Walker were in the band -(talk about a good pint of Bass might have something to do with the 'fondness'! I look forward to hearing if things have changed or not). The other venue is at the Grove Folk Club in Leeds.
I did managed to catch up with the boys over the holidays and found them in good form. They have been in the studio and have some new material they are working on. A 'multi-media' CD had been talked about, but they were still sorting it out - watch this space, or get your name on that e-mail list. We did have a good chat about what people had been listening to over the last year - some was predictable other more bizarre - I will feature some of this over the next few months.
The modern day John Dee's have been telling us that the astronomical signs are favorable for this year, especially compared to 2003. Here's hoping it is, for all of us.

22nd of September:
It has been a long summer break for the news page. But before splitting up for well earned summer breaks, the band managed to find the time to start recording some new tracks in Nick's studio. They are pleased with the initial results and are thinking about a 'mini', possible 'multi-media' release at the end of the year.
There was no Fieldwork tour of Brittany this year, but Dave enjoyed three weeks over there and had a series of good solo gigs. Patrick got away to Ireland and William to Croatia, but no news of any interesting eastern european additions to the set list. Ronan spent as much time as he could on his house. The post holidays get together was at Nick's wedding to Jo - congratulations to them both; hopefully Nick will return refreshed from his honeymoon to work his usual magic with the PA and the recording deck.
After a moderately quite year, the new year opens with a first time appearance in January at the Bramley Apple in Southwell; this is followed by a return to the Victoria Hotel in Beeston. February sees a set of gigs up in Yorkshire. The first is a return to the Black Swan Folk Club in York; the next day sees the band playing for the first time at the Grove Folk Club in Leeds. The band hope to make it three gigs in a row by playing somewhere in Hull on the following day. Check the dates out on the gig list - October sees a visit to the Brown Cow Folk Club in Mansfield and November a return to the Horse and Groom on Radford Road, Nottingham. The band would love to see as many of you as possible.
I hope this makes up for the lack of recent news. I had hoped to tell you about my trip around some of the Black Sea states visiting some of my ancestors' old stomping grounds, but time has caught up with me - maybe another time.

28th of May:
Thanks to everyone who attended the gig at the Horse & Groom - it was great to see a full, even overflowing house, and nice to end the evening with both bands on stage for impromptu renditions of 'Johnny I Hardly Knew You', 'Horses Brawl' and 'Zhankoye'. Why not go and have a spot of lunch at the Victoria on the 12th, (they serve great food there), whilst Fieldwork kick off the afternoon's musical entertainment as part of the Beer & Music Festival.
Hope to see you there!

Here are are some photos taken at the gig.
5th of May:
Check out the Gigs List for details of a return to the Brown Cow in Mansfield and another outing with Bandicoot, this time in Leicester and with Redstart also in the line up. The band is looking forward to playing up in York, but this is next year, so details when it feels more appropriate to say 'in the new year'! The tickets for this Friday's gig with Bandicoot at the Horse and Groom have just about all gone - if you haven't booked yours yet, then e-mail the band or give them a phone - Dave Walker on 0115 9691296.
See you there.

10th April:
Great news - the gig with Bandicoot, ( the trio formed by Tim Garland after leaving the Fieldwork fold a couple of years back ), has been confirmed. Bandicoot play music and songs from various European traditions. The gig will take place at The Horse & Groom, Radford Road, Nottm. on Friday 9th May. Admission will be free, but by ticket only ( the venue have a capacity of 100, which cannot be exceeded ). As this system worked rather well for the C.D. launch gig there last summer, ( the room was full but not crammed ), the band have decided to do the same again this time. If you e-mail the band via fieldwork@fieldworkfolk.com they will post tickets to you, or reserve them for you on the door if this is preferable. Alternatively, you should be able to pick tickets up at the Irish music session in Nottingham on any of the next few Thursdays.
Hope to see you there.

Meanwhile,
here's a little picture of the design used for the ticket. It was
designed by You Kyung Cho, incorporating Al Atkinson's artwork for
the C.D. sleeve for 'Make Me One With Everything'.
10th of March:
The proposed gig at the Maze on the 2nd of April has been postponed. The organiser is still hoping to set up a monthly music event there, but it all depends on whether he can sort things out with the venue's manager. However, the proposed line up of Fieldwork and Tim garland's band Bandicoot will be appearing at the Horse and Groom on Friday the 9th of May, subject to confirmation. If you cannot wait until then, you can catch them at The Victoria Hotel in Beeston on Sunday night, (16th of March). The Victoria Hotel's also has a Beer & Music festival in July and Fieldwork will be appearing their between 1.00 and 2.00 pm on the 12th of July. Magic Car and Kelly's will be playing later on the same day - so it should be a great time with good food, drink and music.
The boys are currently working on some new materials. They are also hoping to lay down some of the current sets' un-recorded material in Nick's studio
Hope to see you soon and remember........

4th of January:
Happy New Year to everyone. Let's hope that somehow it remains as peaceful aspossible.
The band had a great time at the last two gigs of 2002 - one at the regular venue of the Golden Fleece and the other at the Victoria Hotel in Beeston. The latter was a new venue for the band and they are due back there on the 16th of March. Both pubs are well worth a visit, especially when the band is playing! The band have had a break over Xmas, mainly due to Dave and family opting for the sun, sand and atmosphere of Jamaica. But they have shown me a healthy list of songs and projects that they are itching to work on. The continual flow of new ideas and material has been one of the most pleasing things over the last year, as well as the good reviews that the new CD has received. The calendar for the new year has a few gigs inked in already and a provisional one. The provisional one could be interesting if it is confirmed, as it could see Tim Garland's new band, (Bandicote), on the same bill; I believe Will was talking to Tim about the proposed set up over a mince pie and glass of wine just before Xmas - all I have had confirmed so far was that the mince pie was extremely good! If this gig is confirmed then it could be the start of the Maze being a fortnightly or monthly venue for acoustic music - more details as soon as things are confirmed.
Finally, the band have made a video of 'July Wakes', (thanks to loads of hardwork by Nic Shepard). This should be on the site in the near future - so lookout for it.
They say that 'misery is the river of the world', let's hope there are enoughof us rowing the right way in 2003.

4th of November:
Well the Band might have had a short tour of France, but, as you can see, Ihave been in absentia for more than just the summer. Not only that, but alsoproblems with www.sunfishing.co.uk. Ifyou are reading this, then either I have things sorted out, or else you havecome via our new, alternative route - www.fieldworkfolk.com.There is a 'greeting' below from the band. Hopefully, this will be a regularfeature, rather than my short, occasional missives. So what have I been up to?Well now is not necessarily the time to travel around distant family haunts, butif you wait there is never a good time and always a good reason not to. In anycase, next year might be worst, but let's pray that some sanity comes to theworld. Anyway, I have been travelling around seeing distant branches of myextended family and places that have only been mysterious and enticing names infamily lore. I remember as a youngster hearing the stories as they flowed withthe wine. Now, as I grace a much later stage of my life, I finally have someimages and stories of my own to pass on. Anyway, you haven't come hear to listento me so........
BE THERE! The band's next gig is at Carlton Folk Club (Nov 21). Whatis even better is that Dave, Patrick and William will be joined by EamonnMcCarthy and Tim Disney. The band has performed in Clubs as a five piece, butmany years ago with Tim Garland and Mic Walker. So don't miss it - this is oneto see.
........ and from the band:
"Greetings !
Those of you who attended either of the two Fieldwork gigs in Nottingham atthe beginning of the summer (the C.D.launch evening for 'Make Me One WithEverything' at The Horse & Groom and The Golden Fleece a week later) will beaware of our recent resolve and intention of involving other musicians, andartists, within the Fieldwork 'group'. Ronan O'Cualain and Tim Disney performedat both venues ; Eamonn McCarthy played at the former and contributed to therecording of the album ; Sam Proctor also appeared on the new album before histrip 'down under'. Al Atkinson provided artwork both for the album cover, thelaunch evening itself, and for other publicity. Whilst their contributions haveopened up new possibilities for the arrangement, structure and performance ofFieldwork music (and hopefully this pattern will continue) the basic nucleartrio has continued to operate, and in August played some gigs in France. Thissecond short (one week) tour in Brittany was both educative and enjoyable. Probablyevery tour ever undertaken, of whatever duration, will include smooth passagesand turbulent moments. On the positive side, we met some lovely people, playedplenty of music, had our fair share of sunshine (just the one downpour),consumed some fine Breton seafood, and met one or two potentially usefulcontacts for the future. A date for the diary is Thursday 21st November, whenFieldwork will be guests of The Carlton Folk Club (now at The Carlton Pub,Foxhill Road,Carlton)."

This has been a hectic year. I had hoped to redo the whole web site, butevents have overtaken everything. I have had a few months off travelling aroundseeing some old friends and relations in the east. It's never too early to visitloved ones and old haunts, especially when you get to my age. Anyway, enough ofme, maybe I will get round to telling my story sometime, or else the band willhave to tell it for me. What have the band been up to? Well they have had afairly easy time of it gig wise, apart from two consecutive days at the start ofFebruary when they appeared at two venues for the first time; one was NorthwichFolk Club and the other was the Queen's Head in Belper. They enjoyed both nightsand look forward to playing at both venues again. They have spent the rest ofthe time putting their energy into a new CD. Title as yet unknown, but twelvetracks are down with just a few more bits and pieces to put on them before themixing begins. The recording has been done at Nick's, the 'fourth' member of theband who does all the magic behind the desk when they play out with full PA.They tell me that it has been a different experience yet again, with a newengineer and new studio, but with the advantage that Nick knows the sound andmusic almost as well as the band. It was the latter which tipped the balancewhen deciding whether to use Nick's or to go back to Vaughan at Subway Studio, where the band had a great time recording The Rains of Spring. I have heard afew rough mixes and it sounds great. They have also invited some friends to helpout - if you listen carefully you might hear the rain stick they let me 'play'when I popped over to see how they were doing, (that's if they don't cut itout!). They are hoping to wrap up the recording side in the near future, thenthe fun of mixing takes over. Their plan is to have it ready for June when theyare due to play at Grove near Oxford in a benefit organised by 'Folk againstMS'. They are due over in Brittany again at the start of August, where they hopeto once again boost their CD sales.

A small bird alighted in the lime tree beside my veranda yesterday, and sungforth two interesting pieces of news.
Firstly, he (my little feathered friend) was not the only creature to haveflown onto these shores recently - William has returned from his visit to China,in time for next week's gig in Nottingham. And secondly, the Fieldwork boys areapparently planning a trip to the recording studio later this month, to begintracks for another long-playing record.
Having thus brightened my otherwise gloomy morning with his cheeryannouncements, the little fellow then hopped to the uppermost branches, and tookoff into the sun bright air .

Some good reviews for 'The Rains of Spring' have been coming in. Not least the one that appeared in Folk Roots by Simon Jones, (see review page for this and other reviews). The reduced line up has had a number of outings so far; the comments that have been reported back to me have been quite promising. Top of the list is the feedback on the new material that is appearing in the set - all very promising. Some people have drawn a connection to some of the early Fieldwork material, with its simple, interesting and cutting arrangements. I am told that there is more being thought about and worked on. Above all else, the band seem to be relishing working on the new material. If you haven't caught the new line up, then check the gig guide to see when they are next playing near you - and let them know what you think.
Two of the gigs in August are in Brittany. The band are hoping that they can arrange a longer trip next year. The third gig currently in August also has a French flavour, well Ashby de la Zouch sounds French!

The new slim-line Fieldwork, (including a lower average height), has been working on some new material, which will feature in these forthcoming gigs. I have managed to sneak a preview and there are plenty of fresh ideas flying about the rehearsal room.

Hmmm. Apologies to anyone who has been trying to get at the Fieldwork site over the last couple of weeks. The site is currently hosted by totalserve, who have recently been taken over. This normally should not be a problem, except they decided to upgrade / change all their servers. This first of all meant that their web services were unavailable; it then transpired that they were not going to move any of the web sites that they had been hosting; if this was not bad enough, I then had to reset the account to actually have the web space available to re-load the web site. Arragh! No wonder the band left it to me, while they went off playing music. I have had more fun trying to fix a tractor in poor dawn light as a cold wind blows off the black sea.... but that's a story for another time. Hopefully, all the necessary names will have filtered through the system by tomorrow afternoon and I will finish re-loading the site and someone will be reading this.
This new site is hopefully the start of a complete re-vamp. It will be a gradual progress. First I, (on behalf of the band), intend to add some more photos and concentrate on the information on the site. Expect to see some tracks available for download. The band have had one or two of the older cassettes put onto CD - hopefully they will either appear as limited, mail-order or as downloadable from this site.... they are still mulling over it.
Hope you agree the new site is better.

2nd January 2001:
Seasonal humbugs, happy New Year, etc.
Dave, with the help of Vaughan, spent this afternoon remixing The Berberana Riff, (track from the new album). They will probably use one of the remixes as a backing track for live performances.
Following Tim's decision to quit the band, it seems probable that the three January gigs will be the last as a quartet. The remaining threesome, however, are positive about adjusting, rehearsing and playing on. Onwards and upwards!
Sources close to the band suggest that Tim's imminent departure is due to the relentless pressure brought on by constant touring / rehearsing / drinking / drugs etc, etc. There is also a rumour that he is to become a father in the summer, (so that's what he managed to do on the rare hours spent at home).
Oh yes - the band tells me that the new album's out. Virgin, Selectadisc, Dave Mann and Hobgoblin, (bless 'em all), are stocking it. Better still go and see them and get one off them at one of the gigs.
