Firewise Scheme

Surrey Fire & Rescue Service has recognised that fires started by young children are a problem across the county. Whether the result of a curious child playing with matches or the malicious act of a troubled teenager, every fire poses a danger to both lives and property.

Curiosity about fire is a part of a child's growth process and the majority of fires started by
young children are set out of curiosity or experimentation. Consequently, any child can be a
potential fire setter.

The Firewise Scheme aims to help educate children who have either already shown an interest in fire or may be likely to. By understanding the circumstances which lead children to setting fires and then looking at the potential consequences of their actions, we aim to reduce the chances of children in Surrey starting fires and causing injury to themselves and others.

How does the scheme work?

If you have concerns about a child call free on 0800 085 0767. A few basic details will taken
and one of our Firewise Advisors will call you back. They will discuss your particular situation
and assess what action should be taken.

It may be that a selection of literature is enough to educate and warn the child of potential
dangers. However, in most cases, a visit by Firewise Advisors is deemed appropriate.

Who are Firewise Advisors?

The scheme is staffed by trained personnel from Surrey Fire & Rescue Service and is run in
conjunction with other agencies across Surrey.

Each Firewise Advisor undergoes a specialist training course and receives regular refresher
training.

What happens next?

The Firewise Advisor will arrange a convenient time and location, usually at the home, for a
meeting to discuss the dangers and potential risks posed by fire. This is carried out by two
advisors who will use their personal experiences, photographs and videos to show the child the
problems and consequences associated with playing with fire.
What is the aim of the meeting?

This meeting provides information on the proper, controlled use of fire, as well as fire safety
education.
