GOLDING

Books

Shirley Maynard came across an interesting book in her public library research room: Payne-Golding: Wiley Payne (1851) & Nancy Jane Golding (1858): Their Ancestry to Colonial Virginia Their Descendants through c 1995 With Selected Collaterals. Aubrey Hampton Payne. Mass: WabAnawan Publishing, 1999.

There are GOLDINGs mentioned in a book by W. H. Bossence called 'Bossence Honeychurch' about these two families and their ancestry in Australia:

GURR

Dianne Friden, in researching another family, came across a Joane GURRE born c.1590, the second wife of Stephen TREE (ATTREE) of Brighton. She may have been from Brighton, but his father was of Ditchling. That ATTREE name has a pedigree "Of Barcombe and Ditchling". Suggests that possibly there were GURREs in that area in the early 1600's. Dianne mentions that GURRE was also in one record as GURKE.

Mary GURR of Dallington, Sussex married Richard GYLES of Burwash, Sussex on 16 Mar 1695 at Dallington.

James GURR married Phebe DUNGEY (b. 1775, dau of Thomas DUNGEY and Phoebe SPRANGE) on 22 May 1799 in Cranbrook, Kent.

Joseph GURR, butcher, London, married Septima Squires PLANE b. 17 Mar 1806, dau of Thomas PLANE, Maidstone, brewer, and Sarah DOMING (married 11 Dec 1801)

Henry GURR married Eliz. GIBSON on 16 Jul 1806 at Rye, Sussex

And while we are at it, from the Smarden, Kent Parish records removal orders there is a Jane GURR, single woman, removed from Smarden to Faversham 1 Aug 1829.

George GURR of Hothfield, son of Richard GURR married Mary Anne HODGKINSON in Hythe, Kent in 1859. For details, see my Miscellaneous Hythe Marriages page.

1871 Hythe Census Portland Arms, Market Street, Schedule No. 107
David GURR, Lodger, mar, 59, Herry Line
Ann GURR, Lodger, mar, 76, Sussex Eastbourne
Note: It definitely looks like Herry, not Kerry. Any ideas on this place of birth, anyone?

There was a family of watch and clock makers named GURR, who lived in Ewhurst, moved to Robertsbridge in the last decade of the nineteenth century and had a shop in Hawkhurst. The only names recorded in Ewhurst were George GURR, who was a watchmaker operating in 1820 and Edward GURR, who was a clockmaker (an example still exists in Staplecross) and a J T GURR, who was possibly son to either George or Edward. And a rare 1999 sighting - Richard GURR runs a barber's shop in Battle High Street!

Some Kent GURR marriages from the GRO Index:

Gillian found a GURR marriage at St Faith's Church, Melton, Kent on 6th July 1935. Groom: Alfred Stanley PHILLIPS Bride: Doris Amy GURR Witnesses: Frida M FRITH and R.T. GURR. For more information, please contact Grace Thrush, Box 63, Urenui, Taranaki, NZ.

Here is an interesting snippet. Israel MARSHALL, aged 28, sailed from Hull to Fort Cumberland, North America on the good ship Albion in 1774. Israel was a husbandman and his reason for emigrating was that rents were "being raised so high he goes in hope to make a Purchase". More information on the Albion's passenger list.

PEPPERELL

Birth certificate of Emma PEPPERELL, b. Somers Town, St. Pancras, Middlesex in 1856, daughter of Thomas Mills PEPPERELL and Emma STRINGER. Now this really was bad luck, but she's NOT my Emma Pepperell born in 1856 in Middlesex!

And here's another.... William PEPPERELL, bachelor of full age, carpenter, of 23 Northampton St.? and Elizabeth MEAD, spinster of full age, of Sparing? Villa, Canonbury Park, were married by Banns on 30 May 1850 at Christ Church, Islington, Middlesex. William was the son of William PEPPERIL, whip maker, and Elizabeth was the daughter of William MEAD, builder.
