Harriet Gregory
My paternal grandmother was Harriet GREGORY. Granny viewed the new-fangled telephone with distrust throughout her life - the mind boggles at what she would have thought of the Internet!

The only sighting I have of Samuel is in the 1881 census, where he is listed as a widower, born Borough c. 1817, living with son Thomas Paul. I am reasonably confident that this is my Samuel because he is a comb-maker - as he is also described on his son's birth and marriage certificates.
I have not yet traced the marriage of Samuel GREGORY and Harriet COULSON, nor an entry for them on the 1851 census.
There is a possibility for Harriet COULSON on the IGI, but further investigation is obviously required.

Emma PEPPERELL was Dad's Gran. He knew her well and put her birthday - 4th January - in his diary. From the 1881 census and her marriage certificate, she should have been born in 1855. However, I was unable to find a civil registration of her birth. I then came across a baptism in 1859, and to my surprise found five brothers and sisters baptised on the same day. Fortunately the vicar noted the birth dates down and her birthday co-incides with Dad's diary, although when I finally found her birth registration, her birth certificate notes her birthdate as the 5th January, 1853. She evidently docked a couple of years from her age when she married!

The Baptism Register gave the family's address as 2 Maidenhead Court, but my PEPPERELL family do not figure at 2 Maidenhead Court, Moor Lane, Cripplegate on either the 1851 or 1861 census. Emma's birth certificate gives their address as 3 Paradise Row, but they weren't there either in 1851. Ah well!
William PEPPERELL's occupation was noted as a baker on both Emma's birth and marriage certificates. No luck with them so far on the 1851 census.
From the 1881 census, I see that there is a widowed William PEPPERELL, born c. 1820-1 in St Pancras, living with his married daughter Sophie C. PECKETT. Back to the GRO to see if this daughter's birth was registered, and if this might just be my William. Watch this space!
