Groves & Dumbleton
Family History
Last updated 31st March 1999
John GROVES, originally from Warwickshire, married Hester DUMBLETON in Bourton on the Hill in 1799. Hester, baptised in 1768, was the daughter of John DUMBLETON and Patiance HALL. There were DUMBLETON baptisms in Bourton on the Hill right the way back to 1569, but it will be a lifetime's work to trace my line back that far!
John and Hester's grand-daughter Hannah GROVES, married my great-grandfather William MARSHALL, and maybe lived to regret it, as he deserted her in 1880, leaving her to the tender ministrations of Shipston-on-Stour Poor Law Union with a baby (my grandfather) of six months and six other children.

I am delighted to have made contact with a fifth cousin, Rachel, descended from my g.g.g. grandfather's brother, Robert Groves.
Selina and her children appear to be living with Edwin's brother John in the 1861 census. I haven't yet found when Edwin died.
I have found Henry GROVES as a 13 year old servant to a boot maker in Quinton, Warwickshire in the 1871 census. Charles GROVES appears as an inmate of the Shipston on Stour Workhouse on the 1891 census.
Mary Maria GROVES may be the Maria GROVES who is a House Servant to the Rector of Upper Swell in the 1861 census. There is an intriguing marriage entry of a Mary Maria GROVES in Kensington, London 1870. I expect I shall eventually succumb to temptation and order the certificate!
There is also a possible marriage for George GROVES in the Evesham Registration District in 1870. Ditto re certificate!
