5-A-Side Football Competition 2004

This years District competition was organised, as usual in the Inverkeithing Community Wing, with the Cubs and Explorer Scouts playing on Saturday 13th November, and the Scout games on the 11th December.

Many thanks must go to the organiser, Barry Wilson; to the Inverkeithing Wing and staff for use of their facilities; to the Inch Scout Fellowship for keeping the scores and everybody who attended and made the competition a success. Lastly a special thanks must be offered to Mike Warren, a parent helper with one of the groups, who kindly agreed to referee the games on both evenings.

This year, four Cub teams, six Scout teams and two Explorer Scout teams entered, and the competitions were played as a league, each team playing each other team, over a series of games. This avoided the "knock-out" round, and lets every team play the same number of games. It kept the interest in the Cub competition until the penultimate game, until which point two of the teams were in with a chance of winning. However after the last game game, the results showed that the 41st Cubs were outright winners beating the 66th into the runner-up position. A different story with the Explorer Scouts though. As there were only two teams taking part, they played each other, three times. With the 48th not giving any quarter to the 13th. Even with the intervention of allowing the leaders to take part for the last two games, the 13th were no match for the 48th who won every game.

The Scout competition, was the closest seen by all who can remember. After the penultimate game, any of four teams could have won, leaving the competition wide open and dependant on the final game. However, as much as the 68th leaders wished for a three goal difference win over the 66th, the 66th made no mistake winning 2 - 0, making them the champions this year, with the 41st taking the runners-up position. It was also another first for the competition, it is not often that an indoor competition was held up for rain, as the roof leaked onto the games floor, that had to be hurriedly mopped up, before play continued.

It is always sad to see teams loose, especially when they have all tried hard, but a team has to win. Many thanks must go to all those Cubs Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts who took part, to their leaders, families and friends who came to add their support to a very good competition. Thank you all and well done.

All games, were 5 min's each way. A suitable break was held after each game for the referee to have a breather.
