His sovereignty and power is strongly emphasised in many places in the Scriptures. His will is shown to be the ultimate cause of all things. Everything that exists, does so because God wills it. Creation and preservation, government, election and reprobation, etc.. all are by God's will. See the STUDY TEXTS.Much of the confusion in the understanding of believers in this matter, has come about because of a failure to appreciate that the Bible uses the word "will" as applied to God, in different ways. (This is apart from the fact that three Hebrew words are used in the Old Testament and two Greek words in the New Testament! )Ó’ ID V€§€€‚‚‚‚‚‚‚€€€€‚€€€€‚’The "will" of God may mean any or all of the following:1. The power of God to execute a plan and purpose.2. The expression of God's moral nature, including His attributes of love, holiness, righteousness, justice etc.3. The rule(s) of life which He has laid down for his rational creatures. These distinctions have at times been referred to as:1. The Decretive will of God. What He Decrees.2. The Complacent will of God. What He Delights in.©a2 žBH ^€Ć€€€€€€‚‚‚‚€€‚‚€€€€‚’3. The Preceptive will of God. What He Demands or commands His creatures.Again the distinction has beeIžB*n made between the SECRET (or hidden) will of God and the REVEALED will of God.Deuteronomy 29:29 "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. (NKJ)Whilst we keep in mind the fact that there are aspects of God's will which have been revealed to us, or will in the future be revealed, there remain other aspects which are hidden from us and will not be revealed (e.g. the date of the coming again of the Lord Jesus.). In examining the expressions of the will of God which we have outlined, we should understand that these three aspects of God's will are not mutually exclusive - they "overlap" and complement each other.ɈIĒCA P€€€‚€€€€€€€€€‚‚’In order that we might recall the distinctions more easily - we have named them the THREE D's : Decree - Desire - Demand.< žBD1I’’’’’’’’D4DLKStudy Texts1ĒC4D# €€€‚’Study TextsŁDBF5 8€³€€‚€‚‚€‚‚€€‚’Deuteronomy 29:29"The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. Certainly the Bible shows that He is such a God.We usually speak about the decrees of God - because this is how man experiences or knows of them - but we recognise there is but one sovereign decree of God which issues from eternity and is expressed in time. f,Lü€: B€Ķ€€€€€‚€ć’ķjø‰‚‚‚‚’"...according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, Ephesians 1:11 (NKJ)(See in STUDY TEXTS. - the Section on Sovereignty and Power.)Kings in Bible times often had complete and sole authority to make laws and issue decrees which were binding upon their subjects with absolute power of life and death. So the Almighty GoPNü€LKd is seen in the Scriptures to have absolute power to decree whatever He wills. At the very beginning of the Bible we are told that God said, "Let there be light" and there was light! Creation came into being by His decree. (Genesis 1:3)čPNƒ+ $€Ń€€€€‚‚’The old Shorter Westminster Catechism refers to the Decreed Will of God as: "His eternal purpose, according to the counsel of His will, whereby, for His own glory, He hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass."God's eternal purpose is His decreed will. Some aspects of His decreed will are obvious to us - but much of His decreed will is hidden from us; either because we cannot comprehend it - or because God has chosen not to reveal it at this point in time - or perhaps ever. ڦü€é…4 6€M€€‚‚€€‚‚€€‚’God has, in His wisdom and grace decreed the eternal salvation of His elect. But it is also true that while God can do anything He wishes, He cannot act contrary to His own character and being. God is a God of truth - so God cannot lie. God is a Holy and Just God - so God cannot act wickedly or unrighteously. God is not only a God of love - the Bible declares the He IS love. With this in mind, let us turn to the next aspect of the Will of God - His benevolent or complacent will - that which He in His goodness and love DESIRES. We come then to the second of our D's - the Will of Desire.&©ˆa‹# €€€‚’E;‹¦‹1B½†¦‹ą‹ God's Will of Desire:a‹ą‹# €.€€‚’God's Will of Desireদ‹ĄŒ: B€M€€‚€‚€‚€€ ‚€‚‚‚‚’THE GOOD WILL OF GODGod's Will of Desireor His Beneficent or Benevolent Will This is also known as THE COMPLACENT WILL OF GODthat which He delights in.±„ą‹q- (€ €€‚€€‚‚‚’It refers to the desire of God which springs from His inherent goodness and love. For whilst we know that God is HOLY and therefore can act only in accordance with His holiness. Also that He is a Righteous God who must act JUSTLY - with absolute justice. But He is also a GOOD God, and therefore expresses His goodness and kindness towards all his creatures. In fallen creatures affected by sin - these qualities appear to conflict with each other. So the question is asked - How can God say He hates the wicked every day (Psalm 7:11) - and also that He so loved the world that He gave His only Son to die for sinners? (John 3:16)H ĄŒÅĮ? L€€€‚€€‚€€€€€‚€‚’First of all, it is important to understand all scriptures in their contextsqÅĮa‹ and this will resolve the majority of apparent conflicts. Take, for example: 2 Pet 3:9 ... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (NKJ)How, it is asked can God decree that only the elect will be saved in the light of this text? One answer is that the text refers to believers - God is longsuffering towards US -He is not willing that any of US should perish. ¼qÄ/ ,€€€‚‚€€€‚’If it is meant that God wills that ALL men inclusively should come to repentance, then in the light of the whole of scripture we need to see that this would be His benevolent desire - but because it does not accord with His Holiness, Righteousness and Glory - it cannot be His will of Decree. In the decree of God, Christ died for His sheep - not for the goats! He died for those whom the Father had given Him from the foundation of the world.Even so, there are texts which indicate the benevolence of God towards all men. Matt 5:45 ....for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (NKJ)ݬÅĮ^Ē1 0€Y€€‚‚‚‚€€€‚’Also we need to recognise that God is perfect - and what would be a conflict of will for us - is not a conflict of will for Him.We see things from the valley floor - He sees things from the mountain top. Our understanding is deeply flawed - His is grounded in omniscience and omnipotence.Yet it is not merely a question of inability of understanding on our part - for even in our own experience there are things which we desire - but do not will to come about. We may desire our neighbour's wife - but we will not allow that desire to affect our actions. We do not desire that our children should suffer pain - but we may discipline them in love and so cause them pain. óÄ}É, &€ē€€‚‚ć’ķjø‰‚’The will of desire and the will to act do not always coincide. For us it is usually because of our limitations and imperfections - but we should not impute such limitations or imperfections to God. For He always acts in the perfection of His attributes and character. We should humbly recognise therefore that it is not within our ability to fully comprehend the unity of His will and actions, rather than imply any conflict in His will.Again, go back to Deut. 29:29 (check the STUDY TEXTS)’`^ĒĢ2 2€Į€€‚€€‚€‚‚‚‚’Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 5:17 (NKJ)So when we think on the fact that God is not only a loving God - but that HE is LOVE. We need to recall that His love is a HOLY and absolutely JUST and RIGHTEOUS love. It is not like human affections and sentiments, clouded as they are by self love and sin.For example, God in His Holy and Just LOVE, MUST punish sin. Such punishment - even to the point of eternal hell is not a contradiction of that love. Any difficulty we have with this (and most of us do!), lies in us - not in the person of God.R}ÉaĪC T€€€‚‚€€€€€‚ƒ€€€€‚’God's "will of desire" is expressed in the tears of Christ :Matt 23:37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (NKJ)Luke 19:41-42Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, "If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. (NKJ)œ_Ģ = H€æ€€‚€‚‚€€€€€€‚‚’Nevertheless in the decreed will of God Jerusalem suffered the fate which Christ prophesied. It was a dreadful fate! From this thought we move on to the third aspect of the Will of God namely His PRECEPTIVE will - or His will as expressed in His Commands - commandments and precepts - or in terms of our three D's - God's will of DEMAND.aĪ a‹EaĪQ1é B ¤ Q‹C God's Will of Demand: ‹# €.€€‚’God's Will of Demand{NQ- *€œ€€‚€‚€‚‚‚’THE ACCEPTABLE WILL OF GODGOD'S WILL OF DEMAND or HIS PRECEPTIVE WILL㨋é; D€Q€€€ƒ€‚‚‚€‚€€€‚’"My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Colossians 2:2-3(NIV)It is evident from the Scriptures - even from the garden of Eden - that God has made His will known to man in large measure through His commands or precepts. This we see as His "acceptable" will. Pre-eminently God has set out His commands in the Ten Commandments given to Moses. (Exodus 20.) These sum up the moral law. Jesus summarised them and extended them in Mark 12:29-31Õ§¾. *€O€€€€‚€‚’"Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 'And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. "And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." (NKJ)The Bible contains many expressions of God's laws and precepts at different times for His people. We as new Covenant believers are "not under law, but under grace". By grace God's law is written in our hearts together with a desire to obey His word in all things.ŽZéL 4 6€µ€€‚€‚€‚‚€€‚’This aspect of God's Will differs from the other two and complements them. The Expression of the Will by Way of CommandWe might say to our child - "You are to be home by seven o'clock this evening." This is an expression of our will by way of command. However, this does not guarantee that our child will be home by seven.God commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30) but unless the grace of God brings repentance - no man will repent. So His will of command or Demand - is not the same as His will of Decree. It will often coincide with His will of Desire, but not always. Ō¦¾ . *€M€€‚‚‚‚€€‚’We see this in the command given by Jehovah to Pharoah through Moses, to "Let my people go!" But at the same time God "hardened Pharoaoh's heart, that His decreed will in the redemption of His people from slavery might be accomplished. This, we notice, did not take away Pharoah's responsibility in this matter - for we read that Pharoah hardened his own heart!(Exodus 8.15; 9.7 etc.)This aspect of God's will is seen to be the acceptable will of God - when men OBEY it. For us as believers - God's law is completely fulfilled in Christ and His righteousness is IMPUTED (reckoned) to us by grace alone through faith alone. This is what makes us ACCEPTABLE to God.#šL C 3 4€į€€ćG”^‰‚‚€‚€‚’(If this is something which you wish to know more about - ask for our HELP file called "What Must I Do To Be Saved?" Romans 1Y¢@C 2:1-2 (NKJ)KNOWING THE WILL OF GODKnowing ABOUT the will of God is one thing - actually knowing His will for us in our daily lives is another!čY»B1 0€Ń€€€€€€‚‚’What we may have prayerfully discovered in our study thus far - is that the apparent conflicts in the "will of God" are indeed only apparent. In reality God's will is one and it is all enfolded in His divine plan for the redemption of His people - for His own glory. All His will is wrapped up in His eternal decree. It is for us as His creatures to seek to know His revealed will and humbly and joyfully submit to it. This will be our greatest happiness and source of blessing.nF¢@)E( €€€‚€‚’THE WORKS AND WORD OF GODHow can we know His will in the practical everyday outworking of our lives? - The answer is that God has revealed Himself and His will in two ways. Firstly through His works and secondly through His WORD. Through the working of His PROVIDENCE in His works He confirms His WORD. In Bible times He revealed Himself directly to His prophets and apostles - but since the Scriptures were completed He speaks to us through His written word. (Beware of false prophets who add to the Scriptures with what they claim or believe are prophetic words today.)8»BaG4 6€ €€‚€€‚‚‚€€‚’THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28 Since God is a Sovereign, all-powerful God, He is seen to order all things in our lives - every tiny detail. "Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows." Luke 12:6-7 (NKJ)©x)E L1 0€ń€€‚€€€€‚’So we shall see confirmations of God's will in God's provision for us.We may be confident as we study the scriptures that all the important aspects of His will are there made know to us. Through them we shall be given insight into the making of decisions in all lesser matters. There may be times when God, in His wisdom, causes us to wait on Him - and the indications of His providences may be unclear. This will be for our discipline and training - if we are in the way of obedience, knowing our sins forgiven. (The lessons we learn in respect of patience are of great significance in terms of our character. There will be chastisements too in His providential care for those of His children who are on the path of disobedience.) He will not leave us permanently without guidance. On the contrary, He has promised His people the guidance of the Holy Spirit - and such guidance - and indeed the "providences" which we experience will be in accord with His revealed word. If we constantly and humbly judge everything by His revealed word - we shall not go astray, but will learn to walk in His will and way to His glory and praise.•FaGŸNO l€€€‚ėG”^‰‚‚€€€‚€€€‚€‚ć’ķjø‰‚’If you need further help in this area - Email or write to Grace Gospel Software. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: 1 Thes 4:3 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1Thes 5:16-18 (NKJ)(Do work through the Study Texts provided if you have not already done so.
