Huh? (Also known as the Graculus FAQ list)

Graculus... hmm, that's an odd name...

Why, yes it is. It comes from an old English TV show which I watched avidly when I was younger, called Noggin the Nog. You can find a picture of my fictional counterpart here.

Okay, so who are you anyway?

Just a mild-mannered librarian.. no, actually I'm in my mid-30's, I live in England and I work for local government. I did a degree in psychology and I've always been interested in what makes people do what they do.

And this Stargate obsession, what's with that?

Saw the movie, got hooked on James Spader in it (hell, I even own my own mastadge.. *g*), watched the TV show just to see what it would be like. The rest is history.

But this writing thing, surely most people stop writing stories about TV shows when they're in high school?

So I've been told. I've always been thinking up storylines ever since I was small, just never had the chance to get them down on paper before - hell, I even have a part-written fantasy novel knocking around somewhere that I plan to make millions from some day... *g*

So, is it just Stargate SG-1 then?

No, my first love was Man from UNCLE (and I still write MFU stuff occasionally), then I fell for the whole Star Wars thing before SG struck.

Since SG, I've become an avid Buffy and Angel viewer, as well as getting into other shows like Once A Thief, Magnificent Seven and Real Ghostbusters.

And this slash thing, what's with that?

Well, I came across slash when I was looking for SG fanfic and kind of got hooked. At first I was horrified, then fascinated, but never thought I'd actually write the stuff myself. I mean, what kind of weirdo writes romantic stories between two guys? My kind, apparently.

So, what're you working on at the moment?

I'm trying to keep a list here of what's currently being written, but the appearance of a story idea there is no guarantee that it will a) be finished or b) not be superceded by something else I like more when it occurs to me.

Why can't you write something like 'X' or 'Y'?

Probably because I'm just not wired up that way. I like certain kinds of stories more than others, while other plot ideas leave me cold. I can categorically say there are particular kinds of stories that I'd never write - permanent death stories being one of those kinds.

You know, you really ought to write Sam & Jack...

No, I really ought not to. Because you really wouldn't like the kind of Sam & Jack I'd write if I ever got going - prison orange, dishonourable discharges and Fort Leavenworth would feature heavily.

Where do you get your ideas from?

All sorts of places. I might be watching an episode and suddenly wonder something about why character A did that - most of the stories I write are based on the premise 'what if X happened instead of Y'.

Why aren't you writing much gen any more?

Because I turned to the Dark Side. *cough*

Lack of plot ideas, to be honest, rather than lack of interest. I still like gen SG, still think there are a lot of stories waiting to be told, but can't seem to think of them myself.

Why aren't you writing much any more?

I've always been quite a slow writer (don't let the lengthy stories fool you!) and I'm currently halfway through an MA as well as holding down a full-time job. So most of what I've been writing for the past little while goes to zines because that way I can get a trib copy, the opinions of someone I respect on it and then unleash it onto the unsuspecting public. Once I get my dissertation written this may change. Or not. We'll see.

What happened to the 'What's New?' page?

I got bored with it and kept forgetting to update it, and since the pages always have an icon to indicate the newest stories on there, I figured it wasn't worth keeping.

I really liked/hated/was completely underwhelmed by one of your stories. Could I drop you a line?

Sure. My email address is graculus@btinternet.com. I'm usually civilised enough to write back as well.
