Threshers Day Nursery – seeking trustees

Threshers’ is a long-standing playgroup/day nursery in St Mary Cray and became a registered charity in 2001. Our objectives are;

  • To advance the education of children below school age within the London Borough of Bromley.
  • To provide for the care and education of children both in school terms and school holidays with affordable fees.
  • To provide facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare, with the object of improving lives.

We employ 9 full time and 5 part time staff, all with the required levels of N.V.Q training.

The Board of Trustees is seeking new Trustees with relevant skills and backgrounds to help us to improve and further develop the nursery. These skills would include, child care, education, business planning and project management, although other experience relevant to community work would also be welcome.

The Trustees meet 3-4 monthly, although, depending on the relevant skills, some time will be required to meet the needs of the nursery.

All Trustees are subject to references, CRB check and the approval of OFSTED.

Please Help the Cray Valley Boxing Club Survive

Cray Valley Amateur Boxing Club, Ranmore Path, St Mary Cray is experiencing difficulties and needs your help. With British success in the Beijing Games this summer, the best boxing results since 1956, and the 2012 Olympics fast approaching in London it would be a shame to lose a local London club. Cray Valley Amateur Boxing Club recently participated in the Cotmandene street party on 20th September 2008 it was a terrific success with approximately 1400 residents coming to see the displays. Local amateur boxers put on light sparring and pad work shows for the public in a boxing ring that was set up in the street. The Cray Valley Amateur Boxing Club stand was one of the most popular, with many members of the public taking an interest. The Club has played a vital role in engaging local youths from getting into trouble on the green and around local shops. The club has been highly praised by the local residents association in reducing crime and anti social behaviour; the club also has the backing of the local police community support officer.

If you are able to assist with your time, money or expertise in helping save this club please contact me on s.jenkins@bbk.ac.uk or Ollie in the Gym, 14-18 Ranmore Path, St Mary Cray, BR5 2HP. Further information on the club is available via the Club website.

Not a Charity Appeal

I have had yet another leaflet through my door appealing for unwanted clothes etc. to help the Third World. This latest one is from POLOTEX LTD. This and similar are NOT charities. You may be interested in this article and this article about these firms. I would suggest you do not leave them anything but instead donate your spare clothes to a local Charity Shop like Oxfam, British Red Cross ( Cotmandene Crescent ) or Save The Children.

Obviously it is your choice. Other similar leaflets in the past have been from Ambertop Ltd [Company 5333502  Dissolved11/04/2006 ]; Orellana Ltd [ Company 5496347 ],  Silverwall Ltd [ Company 5433460 ] , Help & Trust Ltd [Company 05545477] and Europe Suppliers Ltd [ Company 5401427 ] which according to Companies House, there is a proposal to strike these companies off the register.

Scams Direct.

Can you spare time to help run your local hall ?

The Poverest Coronation Hall needs more local people to serve on its Management Committee. Thank you to those who have already answered our appeal. f you can spare some time, please call the Secretary, Graham Wootten, on 01689 876314

Noise problems

Environmental Health Officers are currently on hand round the clock if you have a problem with noisy neighbours. Phone 020 8313 4830 office hours or 020 8464 4848 out of hours. More information.  But there is a threat to the out of hours service as a recent council meeting has suggested scrapping the out of hours service: Quote below. Petition your Councillor to ensure this essential service is maintained!

Delete Out of Hour Services – Cr £69,000 from 2010/11

This would result in no services to deal with noise problems outside normal working hours. There would be no response to noise from parties, alarms etc. after 5 p.m. or at weekends

Water pipes replacement work in full swing

A two year programme of works by Thames Water Utilities to replace all main and local water pipes throughout Poverest is in full flow. Work in proceeding at a fast pace and work is currently ( March 2008 ) taking place in Marion Crescent and surrounding roads. One silly aspect of this has been the ripping up of Bellefield Road only weeks after it was adopted and surfaced after over a century being unmade!  Do these agencies never co-operate with each other ?  To report a water leak call 0800 714 614.

Carlton Parade Post Office in danger of closure

This popular sub Post Office is one of 5 set to close across Bromley in the latest round of cuts that would see one in five Post Offices across London shutting. In recent years, this area has seen the Post Offices shut in Chipperfield Road (St. Paul's Cray), Tillingbourne Green  and Marion Crescent in Poverest. This latest closure will mean that residents on the whole of Poverest area and beyond will descend on the already busy Crown Post Office in Orpington High Street.  PostWatch and the local MP, John Horam, have both raised concerns about the Carlton Parade closure and you can petition the Post Office about its closure until 2nd April 2008 by writing to Anita Turner, Network Development Manager C/o National Consultation Team, FREEPOST CONSULTATION TEAM By email to: consultation@postoffice.co.uk or call Customer Helpline: 08457 22 33 44. Read the full information here.

Meeting to discuss how St. Mary Cray can be improved

A meeting on 26th June 2007, called  Let's Work Together, gave St. Mary Cray residents a chance to give their views on how St. Mary Cray can be a better place to live work and learn in. The meeting was arranged by the Federation of Broomleigh Residents ( 020 8467 7905 ).

Local couple robbed by masked intruders

A Lynton Avenue couple have become the latest victims of our increasingly violent society. Whilst at home with their two young children, three armed, masked intruders broke in during the night and tied the couple up. They then ransacked the house and stole jewellery and £6000 in cash. The victims and robbers are all Chinese. Police are appealing for anyone with information to call either Bromley police on 01689 891212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Charity Scammers leafleting the area

Bogus 'charities' are still leafleting the area. Please do not put anything out for them but take your unwanted clothes and other goods to your local charity shop where they will help raise cash for charity. There is some useful guidance available here.

Calling on Bromley residents – Community Champions grants

Calling on Bromley residents!  Do you have a good idea for improving your community?  If so, you may be eligible for a £2,000 grant to turn your ideas into reality.

Over the past five years, hundreds of Londoners have received Community Champions grants from the Scarman Trust.  They have been funded to run grassroots projects all over London,  including after-school clubs, neighbourhood newsletters, a Farsi-speaking women’s volleyball team, recycling projects, self-help groups, dance classes, and youth activities – to name just a few.

This fund is underrepresented in Bromley and they are actively looking for applications from local people.  Remember that these grants are for individuals, not organisations.  This year, it’s easier than ever to apply for a Community Champions grant.   There are application deadlines on the 16th of every month from April through to September.

Application packs can be downloaded from their website www.thescarmantrust.org/london.

Poverest Baptists Launch Major Rebuilding Project

The Baptist Church in Poverest Road is a focal point for many in the community. But it has a big problem. The buildings are starting to deteriorate, affecting their community children's and old people's projects. They need to raise 1.7 million to renovate and build a purpose built hall. A series of fundraising events are being put into place to raise the initial money for both planning permission and the full time employment of a fundraiser.

Roman Bath House opened July 15th & 16th 2006

Like every year, the remains of the Roman Bath House, on Poverest Road, first excavated in 1965 was opened to the public on 15th & 16th JULY 2006. Organised by Bromley Museum and ODAS

Newsagents re-opened on Marion Crescent
A new Newsagents has now opened on the site of the old newsagents and Post Office that closed back in 2004. It is called News at Ten! So please give this new venture your full support.
Local Election Results

Popular local councillor John Holbrook was defeated in the local elections held on 4th May 2006.Cray Valley East retains its three existing Lib Dem Councillors whilst in Cray Valley West, there is now just one Labour Councillor (Colin Willetts) joined by two Conservatives.  I am sure others will wish to join me in thanking John Holbrook for all his hard work helping Poverest residents with their Council problems over many years and wish him well for the future.  You can see the results here

Anti-Social Neighbours will face benefit cuts

The government recently announced that people evicted from their homes for anti-social behaviour will lose part of their housing benefit unless they undergo rehabilitation. Works & pensions Minister John Hutton said "Communities are fed up with the disruption caused by people who show no respect to their neighbours"  The first pilot scheme is due to start in 2008. See the press release.

Recycle...or else!

Later this year, Bromley Council will refuse to collect your rubbish if you persistently put recyclable items in with your rubbish. Information on recycling in Bromley can be had here. And if you are caught dropping litter, you can now be fined £70 under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.

Bellefield Road

A resident in this unmade road has written to the local press about their difficulty of living in this new housing association development. They ask, "so who is responsible for the litter, the fly-tipping the dumped bikes and prams". If you are caught dropping litter, you can now be fined £70 under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.

Mum's Army

Mums’ Army is a pressure group, started by Take a Break Magazine which wishes to push the problem of antisocial behaviour higher up the political agenda, and keep it there. Whatever the government says, antisocial behaviour continues to grow and is getting worse. We accept that the government is doing something, but we want to make sure that it’s not just words, it’s action. Antisocial behaviour is a massive long-term problem. It is easy for the government to make a big fuss one day and to forget about it the next. Mums’ Army is here to make sure that they don’t forget about it, that they continue to combat it month after month, year after year.

Amateur Boxing Club now open

Carlton Parade - Action Promised

Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Martin Curry has suggested that local shopping areas like Marion Crescent and Carlton Parade have environmental improvements like flower tubs. Also, shopkeepers contacted fellow Councillor David McBride about ant-social behaviour and cleaning issues in Carlton Parade.  You will have noticed there are now less - not more - litter bins along this stretch and in St. Andrews Drive where one of the two bins have recently been removed.

Thank You Bromley Council!

Because of continual pressure, the Council now regularly sweep and clear litter from, Bridge Road and the footway through to Goodmead Road. It is up to all who live in and pass through, to keep it that way. The only reason an area is littered, is because people put it there. And every conceivable thing is dumped along here - from crisp packets to piles of hardcore. Please, take your litter homeAnd if you are caught dropping litter, you are liable to be fined £70 under the new Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.  To report problem with street cleaning, report it to the Council using this form.

Dumped Shopping Trolleys

The Bridge Road area of Poverest is increasingly looking like a rubbish tip with shopping trolleys dumped all around - in bushes, in skips, anywhere.  For goodness sake take your shopping home like everyone else does - in bags and either walk, catch a bus home - or if you have one, a car. Dumping them is antisocial behaviour  and makes the area look a mess, which it wasn't up to recently. To report dumped Sainsbury's trolleys call TCS Ltd on 01392 882210......  100,000 trolleys are stolen (that's what it is) from UK supermarkets every year, putting up the cost of your shop. Each one costs £80 to replace.

Beware of receiving an invoice for "The European City Guide". It is, in my opinion, a scam!  I received communication from them despite the company supposedly being closed down - in 2003!  If you have been affected by what you perceive to be misleading mailshot, sign the Europe-wide petition.  More information here  and advice from the Advertising Standards Authority. and Citizens Advice Bureau. If your company gets a form - do not sign - but report it to Rob Vale, Trading Standards Manager at Bromley Council You could also write a letter of complaint to the Spanish authorities.

June 2005

Orpington Excelsior Bowling Club held its taster bowling days on June 11th and 12th at its ground in Poverest Park. For details of this popular bowling club, call either Dave on 01689 838368, or Nic on 01689 898422.

May 2005
Petts Wood has officially been recognised again - about six years since The Post Office took the name out of its list of places. Petts Wood & District Residents' Association have been campaigning for some time to bring about this u-turn. Bromley Council have been helping to determine exactly what roads are in Petts Wood - and which ones are not!.  More soon - but visit here in the meantime.
December 2004

There was carol singing in Poverest Park on Saturday 18th December from 4-5pm. The Salvation Army Band (St. Mary Cray Corps.) and the Poverest Primary School Choir sang traditional carols around a fire and a Christmas Tree which the public were invited to dress afterwards.  Rev. Jon Ehlers from Christ Lutheran Church lead the prayers. It was the first event organised by the newly formed Friends of Poverest Park.

A  resident near Poverest School, who, for 13 years had decorated his large conifer tree with lights to bring Christmas cheer to his neighbours, passers-by and children has been dealt a cruel blow. The same day as putting the lights up, some "rat" had attempted to steal them, at 1.30 in the morning. Last year, a neighbour had a lawn decoration stolen. The resident sends the thief a Christmas wish - "may I wish you misery and bad luck for the rest of your lives because that is what you deserve".

Petts Wood seems to be expanding. In their bid to get Petts Wood recognised by the Post Office, Petts Wood Residents Association and Bromley Council have drawn up a list of roads that define the area of Petts Wood for confirmation at a Council meeting on 15th December. On that list is included Grosvenor Road, Shepperton Road, Poverest Road (Nos. 148 upwards even and 231 upwards odd). If one looks on the residents association website we see that those roads are declared as not being part of Petts Wood but within the area covered by the Association.

The choir at Poverest Primary has recently been reformed.  It gave its first performance at a harvest festival held at the school in October, then gave a performance  at the school's Christmas Fair on 3rd December.

A Ranmore Path resident has written to The News Shopper praising Broomleigh Housing Association for finally improving the stairwells in the flats. But she reminds Broomleigh that it stated in March 2003 that it promised to convert the boarded up shops into flats if they could not let the shops. All the shops except two are still un-let while the demand for one-bedroom flats is stronger than ever. Come on Broomleigh / Bromley Council do something positive here and make this area more attractive!

I have received emails from a player with FC Poverest, who writes ".....I play for FC Poverest and I'd really like us to be included on your website as we are a local football club and mostly all of us went to Poverest Primary School. Until this season we also played at Poverest Park but sadly it was deemed not good enough by the league because of the poor changing facilities. Although all of our players loved playing at Poverest Rec. and we all have great memories of it, I'm afraid every opposition player and referee had different opinions of it. The Orpington & Bromley Sunday District Football League
would definitely not allow us to play on it next season if all things go to plan and we are promoted to the top league. Poverest Park only has one pitch and it is used by others for a kick about and gets very churned up, also the grass does get wet too often so it affects the football too. So we have moved to Norman park near Bromley Common, It is quite a lot further but its the only ground which is affordable and that the league will allow a team in the premier to play on. With new sponsors we hope to move back more local next year. All teams in the senior league play on private or bank grounds as they are well looked after by groundsmen, good football can be played on them as they have minimal diverts and bumps. Most have bars too so that players can have a drink there after the game. We will hopefully find a ground in the Orpington area with good facilities like this that will take us for next year.

November 2004

A new group, The Friends of Poverest Park, has been set up following a well attended public meeting at Perry Hall Primary School. Already a large number of local residents are keen to get stuck in and assist Bromley Council in running the recreation ground which boasts a tennis court, children's playground, and is home to Orpington Excelsior Bowling Club. It even has a small wood (Covet Wood) to explore. The first event, a carol concert, is planned for December.

A Poverest teenager, Grace Bowyer (13) has won first prize in the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing finals (Latin section). Grace was taught at the Dancewise Club in New Eltham.  Her mother Grace Bowyer says she and her husband, who live in Poverest Road, are very proud of their daughter's achievement.

October 2004

Traders in Marion Crescent and Stanley Way have joined forces to come up with a number of ideas to try and halt the decline in trade since the Post Office closed earlier in the year.  Already, a new website  has been set up which lists all the shops in the parade. The local greengrocers run by Brett Davies had an apple promotion as part of National Apple Day (21st October). Traders would like to get a cash point installed and negotiations are underway with a company.  MP John Horam supports the campaign and is working to help them any way he can.

A fire-fighter in Lockesley Drive, Les Brown, has retired after 30 years service and is looking forward to be able to spend more time with his wife Wendy and their three children.

August 2004

The Royal Mail have announced that the Post Office in Marion Crescent will officially close at the end of the month. It closed earlier in the year when the popular sub-postmaster, Tony Murphy, was jailed for fraud. He has now been released and apparently now living in Sevenoaks. All the best, Tony!

February 2004

A major £800,000 'improvement' to Cray Avenue, between Poverest Road and Sevenoaks Way is nearing completion. The scheme has seen new street lights, a bus lane, and Pelican Crossing installed.

Question is - will buses actually be any more reliable than they were before? Nothing has been done to stop the rat-running, during rush hours, down Cray Valley Road. It is, in my view, the conflicting traffic movements at this spot that is the real problem.

January  2004

Work finally started on the construction of a terrace of 8 homes on the old Majorrun site in Bellefield Road. These are being built by Greenacre Homes. During the excavation of this site prior to work commencing, a few interesting finds were made; the site is of course close  to the Roman Bath House in Poverest Road.

July 2003

The Seven Stiles  pub, Tillingbourne Green, , has been temporarily saved from demolition, Bromley Council again rejected plans by The Creighton Trust to demolish the pub and erect 30 or so affordable flats on the site, saying it would be an overdevelopment. An appeal is likely.  The pub, the only one in Poverest,  has been the subject of  arson attacks [News Shopper Story] since its closure in July 2002. A petition, organised by local Labour Councillor Colin Willetts, was signed by over 200 residents, and called for the pub to be re-opened and prevent the site being used for housing.  (News Shopper Story)

April 2003

The Cray Valley Hub, a drop-in centre for youths, was opened at the former Black Boy Pub in St. Mary Cray High Street. It is open on Mondays by appointment, and Tuesday to Saturdays 2-5.30pm. A housing service, run by Look Ahead Housing Association, is also offered.  For details of the full range of activities available, call 01689 838797.

2002

A coffee morning was held in November , at the home of Lucinda & Clive Reynolds of Lockesley Drive  in aid of the Bone Marrow Research Fund, based at Great Ormond Street Hospital.  Their baby son, Nigel, died of Severe Combined Immuno Deficiency (SCID) ("baby in the bubble" syndrome) which affects just one in a million babies. Because of ongoing research into the condition, a baby boy was successfully 'cured' by Gene Therapy earlier this year.

Thieves made a dramatic exit in August when they stole a lorry from a yard in Bridge Road ,....they drove the lorry at speed through the fence! Remains of the fence were scattered all over the road and the lorry sped off and hasn't been since.  Days later a similar theft was made from the same yard, this time it was a motorbike and their escape was made by crashing through fence at the front fronting onto Cray Avenue.

In June, an exhibition of old photographs of the area (Slopers Island)  could be seen at The Poverest Coronation Hall in Bridge Road.

Majorrun Ltd in Bellefield Road were refused retrospective planning permission in May for an already constructed detached building they were using to repair their fleet of 13 tipper trucks. Grounds for refusal were that they  "constitutes a prominent and intrusive feature in the surrounding area. harmful to the amenities of nearby properties and the street scene..."

Local people were apathetic to the local council elections on Thursday, 2nd May. A pathetic 30% of the electorate entitled to vote bothered turn out. In Cray Valley East ward, the Liberal Democrats were the victors, whilst in Cray Valley West, the Labour Party won. Further details.

Orpington Lions Club said in March they will have to fold if more community spirited local people didn't join. The 30 year old Club, combines social activities with fund raising. If you're interested, call Ian on 01689 819906.

Police appealed for witnesses to a tragic incident early on the 11th March. A married woman jumped to her death from the railway bridge in Chislehurst Road, Petts Wood. Rail services through St. Mary Cray were severely delayed all that day.

Jim Howitt gave an  illustrated talk,  "St. Mary Cray Re-Visited" at St. Mary Cray Action Group's February meeting. There were slides of Poverest Farm, the old "Doss House" at the bottom of Poverest Road, and a view up Poverest Road in the 1920s, showing the long since demolished cottages where strange goings-on went on. Unbeknown to the residents, they were built over a Saxon cemetery!

American gospel and jazz singer L D Frazier gave a free concert at Christ Lutheran Church in Poverest Road in January.

2001

Major changes to bus routes took place in Orpington and St Mary Cray,  on 1 December.  In Poverest, this affected both the R2 and R3 routes.

In November , a £4m state of the art ultrafiltration membrane plant was completed at Thames Waters' North Orpington Well Station, in East Drive. The station supplies 60,000 homes and businesses across South London.

An illustrated talk about the history of Orpington Hospital was given in September at the Vernon Hall, High Street, St. Mary Cray, organised by the St. Mary Cray Action Group.

Arsonists set fire to the cricket pavilion in Poverest Recreation Ground in May. Damage was confined to the roof.

The history of St. Mary Cray was the subject of an exhibition held in January at the Bromley Central Library; whilst a Hayfield Road couple, Arthur and Eileen Hinckley, celebrated 65 years of marriage.

2000

In December, children from Poverest Primary School played a Christmas carol on hand chimes at a service held at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Locksbottom. This marked the switching-on of South Bromley HospiceCare's [now Harris HospisCare] tree of life.

November saw news that Caz Petrequin, of   Lockesley Drive,  had raised £2,500 for The Childrens Society . She   walked the Inca Trail in Peru.

Got any news? let me know.
