Dynaflite Talon flying above Castlelaw Hill, just South of Edinburgh

Talon in Flight.

I now have the Multiplex Cockpit, move forward to the 21st century! I really should have gone and bought a computer system earlier but at least this way I got one when they were all fairly mature. It really does open up the possibilities as you can change the set-up so easily. Also mixing the controls is now really simple. (I did swither between the new Futaba system which apparently is also very good and the Cockpit. Trouble was I quite liked the somewhat understated look of the Cockpit - tough Futaba!)

Old Faithful Model, Chris Foss' Phase 6 in flight at Hillend (Photo Courtesy Pentland House.)

This photo was taken in May 2002, but the model still flies as well as ever. First aired in August 1980, it has proved unbelievably well behaved; flies in marginal through moderate winds, even force 6 or 7 when the author has completely lost all sense of responsibility. (The 1½lbs lead ballast helps.) In the background you can see Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags, next the leaky Scottish Parliament building (not quite visible at this range), only 7 miles away. We are lucky here in Edinburgh with flying sites which are so close to the city, here at Hillend Ski slope and for Westerly winds, some 3 miles South at Castlelaw Army training range. Visitors always welcome. (with insurance)

Also to come shortly: photos of the new Zagi which I bought for my son. It says on the box that it's indestructible and so far that seems true. However he is working on it and if it all goes pear shaped and ends up in the carrier bag, photographic evidence will be provided.

And I've now got a Centi-Phase (you remember the old Chris Foss 100") with some o/d wings with flapperons to play with. Still got to test fly it properly, although all seems good so far. Rolls, Loops, not inverted yet.

At Castlelaw with 'Muscovy'.

This Canard (shown alongside) resulted from many hours of playing with a
Canard which I made on an early version of Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The model performs much as expected, especially as regards very slow
stall speed and really easy landing in most wind strengths. To enable easy
trimming of the two wing servos I used the Servo splitter below to allow
trimming once the servos had been buried in the wings. The servo inverter
was created on the way to making the splitter and allows reversing of the
servo (and electronic trimming of neutral) without having to rewire anything.
They can both be build on stripboard to small size. The only component
specification is that the timing capacitor should be Polester or Polycarbonate,
not ceramic. The smoothing capacitor is normal Tantalum.

(Span is 1900mm and Root Chord is 170mm)

Well the update here is that with the new Cockpit Tx I've done away with the cunning servo splitter thingy and mixed it all up so that I've got elevons and an extra elevator at the nose. Still no loops though! Rolls really well and with the front canard elevator I should be able to manage inverted really easily. Interesting trials to come!

Robert's Canard in flight.

Also an o/d model and very successful too.

And a bit about my model gliding club site:-FVSPub3.htm

I am (no longer) secretary and treasurer for a model slope soaring club. (Colin Murray has taken over and is doing a really good job, letting me relax and get on with my life.) My role is now limited to the monthly Army faxes for access to Castlelaw.

Forth Valley Soarers(Pour les lecteurs Français:C'est un club de Vol de Pente.)

We fly with a mix of models: Aerobatic, Trainers, PSS, and even (see pictures above) canards.
In brief we fly every weekend whenever the weather permits at either our Hillend or Castlelaw sites near Edinburgh.
