ACTON SECTOR (POLICE) WORKING GROUP

REPORT OF A MEETING ON DECEMBER 3, 2003

This is the first time AGRA has attended this group, which concentrates on Acton policing. Insp. Steve Newberry and all the Acton Officers were present together with representatives from all the Acton Wards/Residents’ Associations. There appears to be some overlap with the Ealing Community Police Consultative Group. A comment was made on the presence of only one Councillor. Attendance was around 25, apparently average.

Inspector Steve Newberry.

  1. Street crime. A reduction of 25% borough-wide has been spoiled by recent bag-snatching on Acton Green Common.
  2. Motor vehicle crime. Opportunist crimes at petrol stations and hotel car parks. The public are urged to lock cars when paying at petrol stations. The role of management was discussed
  3. Antisocial behaviour; excessive drinking around Safeways was discussed at length
  4. Street Wardens are not yet employed in Ealing; should they be? Apparently there is money available
  5. S Acton Estate. Already 34 arrests, mainly drug related. Quantities of crack cocaine seized. Many stolen and untaxed cars.

Mobile Phone legislation

The Licensing Officer clarified the law. “When driving” includes stopped at traffic lights. If stationary in a traffic jam, the engine must be turned off before phoning. If not handling it, OK; can use 999. 2 way radios exempt. Currently not an endorsable offence, probably soon will become 3 points.

Licensing reform

Awaiting government advice. Councils will have to write their own policies, following local consultation. There will be significant effects on residents, who will retain the right to object to new licences. There is a need for increased cooperation between Police and Council

Acton Police Station

The poor relation! Refurbishment delayed until February

Police numbers

Ealing is 37 short and still needs 4 more PBOs. Many recruits to Met., not all can be employed. Nearly 80% officers in Ealing are probationers.
