EALING COMMUNITY AND POLICE CONSULTATIVE GROUP
REPORT OF A MEETING, JANUARY 31, 2006
1. The Borough Commander – Chief Supt. Colette Paul
There has been a general reduction in crime but an increase in burglary and theft from motor vehicles; both crimes are opportunistic – the circumstances are right – and are often carried out by the same people, frequently to finance a drug habit. Too many people leave valuables on show in cars and leave houses open to burglars. We all have a responsibility to be more careful. Warning notices may be posted to houses that look vulnerable and car owners will be identified and contacted, via DVLA.
Ealing has had a smaller rise in race crime than most other boroughs; several crack houses have been closed; Dispersal Orders are continuing. The community needs to assist the police in preventing and combatting crime.
2. Safer Neighbourhoods – Inspector Ray Elbourne
Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be in place in all Ealing Wards by the end of March. They will consist initially of one Sergeant, 2 PCs and 1 Community Support Officer; ours – Southfield Ward, of which we comprise around one third, – will be based in King St. Acton. A Focus group will be set up to represent the community. More details when they are available. The emphasis is on providing communities with what they want; we identify issues and priorities and tell them what we want them to do! It all sounds positive; the Council are involved, as are the Probation Service that runs a Community Payback scheme where trouble-makers have to clear up.
I will report further on the setting up of our Safer Neighbourhood Team shortly.
