Div 1 Result - John O'Groats 1 Castletown 3 3rd June 2003
John O'Groats 1 v 3 Castletown
John O'Groats returned to Division 1 football with another defeat to 4th
placed team Castletown. Groats almost at full strength apart from Ewan Mackay but had plenty off cover available with a full 4 substitutes on the subs bench. Groats started with the normal 4-4-2 formation pushing John Banks in left midfield and Willie Ross moving into the left back position.
Both teams got off to a fairly even start with the first chance of the match falling to Castletown
after 16 minutes, only for keeper Henderson pulling off a superb save. Groats were playing some good football and had a further chance a few minutes later when Robertson had a chance to chip the keeper but failed to hit the target.
Groats were rewarded for their efforts when midfielder MacAllan scored to put Groats ahead after 20 minutes, although the goal was deflected in, the midfielder would claim that as his first goal of the season!
Castletown put on further pressure and got an equaliser when the Groats offside trap never worked and the Castletown player beat the keeper. Castletown took the lead after 34 minutes when the striker chipped Henderson to make it 2 - 1. Castletown almost scored again on the half time mark but Henderson pulled of yet another fine save to keep Groats in the game.
Castletown started the 2nd half were they left off and scored within a minute of the restart to make the game 3 - 1. Groats battled back hard but Castletown proved too strong and came out with the 3 points. Andy Webster made a couple of changes in the 2nd half, young Stuart
Sinclair replacing Willie Ross and Greg Muir came on for John Banks who had put in a good shift on the left wing.
Groats will next face league leaders Acks on Tuesday night at the Dammies.
