Groats get first Win of the Season

John O'Groats 3 v 1 Halkirk

John O'Groats got there first win of the season with a hard fought victory over Division 2 outfit Halkrik. John O'Groats still missing some key players were without regular goalkeeper Shaun Henderson, this meant back-up keeper Willie Ross who regularly plays right-back took up the position between the sticks.

Other changes included on loan triallist Ally Webster from Francis St. Club taking over the sweeper role. Player/Manager Andy Webster started up front with Derek Munro, Ewan Mackay took over the left midfield which meant youngster David Green had to settle for a position on the sub bench. Another new face in the squad included young defender S. Sinclair currently playing with Ross County youngsters.

Groats got off to the best possible start when veteran striker Andy Webster himself latched on to a Mark Banks pass to score within the opening 4 minutes of the game. From that point it might have looked that Groats were going to have a stroll in the park, however that was certainly not the case as Halkirk battled back and scored from a corner within 13 minutes. From then onwards the game was pretty much all Halkirk, who missed various changes and hit the up-right a couple of times.

Just on the half time mark John O'Groats came back into the came, Derek Munro had a chance to make it 2 - 1, but failed to score. on the 49th minute captain Sinclair scored with a good header from another Mark Banks cross to make it 2 -1.

The 2nd half was pretty even again with both sides battling away. Groats rang the changes with youngster S. Sinclair replacing J. Banks on the 57 min mark. Iain Rosie replaced goal scorer Webster in 61 min's. David Green came on for McAllan and Malcolm replaced M. Munro in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Groats seemed to control the last 10 min's of the game and seemed fairly confident of getting a win. In the last 7 min's of the game M. Banks say the Halkirk keeper of his line and tried the long shot his effort wasn't very far off. On the 90th minute Groats main striker D. Munro was one on one with the Goalkeeper and slotted the ball past the keeper to finnish the game of 3 - 1.
