Groats push Acks all the way! 10th June 2003
Thurso Acks 3 v 2 John O'Groats
John O'Groats give league leaders Acks a bit of a scare last night as Groats took a 2 - 0 lead for 50 minutes to end up loosing 3 - 2 in close encounter at The Dammies.
John O'Groats fielded their strongest team and were given a major boost with the return of Shaun Henstridge who is currently away at University. This allowed for Henstridge to partner Derek up front and push his brother Mark back to his usual right midfield role. Mark Banks was pushed back to defence with Willie Ross taking a midfield role.
John O'Groats started the game well with some good passing and keeping possesion of the ball. MacAllan had an excellent chance to add to his goal the previous week but missed a pretty much open target. Groats kept playing good football and were rewarded with their efforts after 14 minutes, bit of a goal mouth scramble ended up with an Acks player putting the ball in the back of the net to make it 1 - 0 for John O'Groats.
Groats picked up were they left off and scored a brilliant goal in 22 minutes, D. Munro put in a superb cross for Henstridge to header the ball in the top corner to make it 2 - 0. Acks applied further pressure as expected but the Groats defence hung on to take a 2 - 0 lead at half time.
Acks pilled on the pressure in the 2nd half as expected but their strikers provided some poor finishing. Acks pulled one back in 52 minutes and some sloppy Groats defending allowed them to equalise a few minutes later. Some poor John O'Groats passing in the 2nd half made Acks look like they were actually playing some good football! Acks took the lead to make it 3 - 2 after 83 minutes. John O'Groats tried to get back into the game but found it difficult, however a good performance was put in by all players to give the league leaders a bit of a scare.
Groats will next face Division 2 newcomers Mid County on Monday night.
