Del Scores Golden Goal Against Halkirk
14th May 2003

Halkirk 4 v 5 John O'Groats (AET)

John O'Groats striker Derek Munro scored a golden goal penalty in Extra Time against Halkirk to save John O'Groats blushes and scrape through to the next round of the David Allan Shield.

John O'Groats fielded another weakened team which lacked the midfield services of MacAllan and Robertson both on other duties while defender Mackay is still currently injured, but welcomed back J. Banks to left-back. However still should have had the superior class to ease past Division 2 outfit Halkirk who currently sit middle of the table in Division 2.

John O'Groats started off by far the better team and showed there class in the opening 20 minutes of the game, they took the lead through a Mark Banks goal after 32 minutes and scored a further goal 4 minutes later through Mark Munro. John O'Groats were pretty much cruising the game and could have easily been 3 or 4 - 0 up however let Halkirk back into the game and they scored with 5 minutes left of the first half.

John O'Groats started the 2nd half brightly and scored another goal after 50 minutes with striker Derek Munro causing all sort of problems for the Halkirk defence. Halkirk fought back hard, sometimes too hard, and should have seen at least a couple of players sent of for some very rash tackles, however referee Wheatcroft let it go with just a booking!

Some very sloppy defending lead to Halkirk making it 3 - 2 a pass back from M. Munro lead to a free kick right in the penalty area which Halkirk scored to make it 3 - 3. John O'Groats seemed to let there heads go down and some further poor defending allowed Halkirk to take the lead to make the game 4 - 3 with 5 minutes to go. John O'Groats put on some pressure in the last few minutes of the game knowing they needed a goal to take the game to Extra Time otherwise they were heading for the exit. Defender Tait picked up a loose ball in the Halkirk penalty area and slotted the ball past the stranded Halkirk keep in the last few min's to make it 4 - 4.

John O'Groats were given a penalty within 5 min's of Extra Time which striker Derek Munro scored to give John O'Groats a win and through to the next round. John O'Groats will be by no means happy with their gutless performance however will be relived not to have picked up any injuries due to some questionable tackles by the Halkirk players.

John O'Groats next face Keiss at home in the Highland Amateur Cup Round 2 on Saturday 17th May.
