16th June 2003

Mid County 0 v 9 John O'Groats

John O'Groats caused all sort of problems to Division 2 team Mid County as they were beaten 9 - 0 in Watten last night. Groats striker Derek Munro bagged 5 goals along the way.

John O'Groats fielded an almost full strength team but were without the services of M. Banks (flu) and Robertson (other duties). Young promising defender Stewart Sinclair was given a chance to start in centre defence along side other regular centre back Stuart Sinclair. Willie Ross was pushed into centre midfield and Greig Muir was also given a first team start after some recent good displays.

Groats perhaps took a little time to settle but after missing a good few early chances took the lead after 12 minutes through striker Derek Munro, Munro scored again in 25 minutes and sealed his hat-trick after 28 minutes. Mid County providing some shocking defending allowing Munro to easily put away the chances.

Groats next goal came from Willie Ross (36 mins), who was certainly enjoying himself in midfield linking up well with MacAllan and the Groats strikers. Ross scored his first goal of the season, but unfortunately picked up a knock at the same time. 4 minutes later D. Munro scored another goal to take a 5 - 0 lead at half time.

Munro started the 2nd half were he left of and scored within a minute of the restart to make it 6 - 0 and score his 5th goal on the night. Groats made a few changes taking on youngster David Green to replace the injured Ross, Mackay on for Muir. Youngster Malcolm replaced goal hero Munro giving the striker a rest. Groats had to wait until the 80th minute before making it 7-0 as return striker Henstridge finally put the ball in the back of the net after missing a host of chances.

Winger Mark Munro who had also missed a few chances eventually found the back of the net in 83 minutes. Hammish MacAllan almost got his 2nd of the season with a long range effort that just dipped over the post. Stuart Sinclair pushed up front in the last few min's and was rewarded with a long shot to make it 9 - 0 on the night.

Groats keeper Henderson must have had one of his quietest nights yet only having to deal with a couple pass backs from his defenders and one shot from Mid County that went well wide of target.

Groats next game is against Pentland Utd on Wednesday night where they will certainly find the challenge from the opponents quite a bit tougher!
