Highland Amateur Cup Exit for John O'Groats 17th May 2003
John O'Groats 1 v 2 Keiss
John O'Groats suffered another blow to their poor season by loosing 2 - 1 to rivals Keiss in Round 2 of the Highland Amateur Cup.
Groats started with their pretty much regular team but welcomed the return of MacAllan to midfield, but were still without defender Mackay (injured), Robertson (other duties) and Chairman/Player Willie Ross. Good news for John O'Groats is that Ross should be back for the Francis St Club game on Friday night, apparently he was spotted out with is wife in Wick on Saturday night!
Groats started the game very poorly and very quietly, Keiss started of the brighter team and had a shot dribble past Henderson's post within 8 minutes of the game. Keiss were rewarded with their efforts 4 minutes later as they scored a goal that was helped in by the strong John O'Groats winds.
Groats did pick themselves up slightly however with the wind in their faces found the challenge very tough, Derek Munro had a glorious chance to make it 1 - 1 within quarter of an hour but missed the target. Keiss applied more pressure and scored with 17 minutes to make it 2 - 0. Groats went off at half time very disappointed with their 1st half efforts.
Groats started the 2nd half more brightly with the wind on their backs knowing they needed goals if they were to progress to the next round of the Highland Amateur Cup. It wasn't until 61 minutes when Derek Munro had another chance to score but the keeper pulled off a save. 7 minutes later it was that man again and Groats main threat Derek Munro that scored to make it 2 - 1.
Groats found it difficult to play football and get the ball to feat. A spirited Keiss team put up a good battle and deserved the victory the best Groats could have hoped for was a reply.
Groats next face Francis St Club on Friday night in Groats.
