Groats lose out on Golden Goal in Extra Time 23rd June 2003
Thurso Acks 3 v 2 John O'Groats (AET)
John O'Groats put up yet another good display against Division 1 league leaders Thurso Acks but were denied a place in the Semi Finals after Acks got the Golden Goal in Extra Time to scrape through 3 - 2.
John O'Groats fielded a slightly weaker team from the previous good displays against Mid County and Pentland Utd. Groats only had 11 players to pick from at the start of the game which meant starts for Green and Rosie operating in midfield as Groats opted for a 3-5-2 formation. Groats were without right winger Mark Murno away on other duties.
Groats got off to the worst possible start when Acks were giving a soft penalty within 2 minutes into the game, but the Groats number 1 shot stopper pulled off the save to deny Acks taking the lead.
Acks did take the lead 20 minutes later when MacDougall scored a brilliant strike to put acks 1 - 0 in front. John O'Groats digged straight back in when Shaun Henstridge slotted the ball past the Acks keeper 1 minute into the restart. John O'Groats we're forced to make a change just before half time as Tait picked up a groin injury, John Banks came on as the replacement in defence.
Acks took the lead again just on the hour mark to make it 2 - 1. John O'Groats put on further pressure and were certainly looking confident of getting an equaliser. Derek Munro had a great chance that was cleared off the line to make it 2 - 2. Groats made another change taking on young Stewart Sinclair for Iain Rosie, Sinclair dropped back in defence pushing M. Banks into midfield as Groats really pushed for the equalising goal.
Their chance came in 80 minutes when Henstridge was brought down in the penalty area, D. Munro got his chance off the equaliser and scored putting the Acks keeper the wrong way. Groats had another chance in the last minute but Sinclair's shot was well off target.
The game went to Extra Time Golden Goal and Acks got the winner within almost 2 minutes of the kick off. Its the 3rd time John O'Groats have played Acks this season and each time have certainly given them a good run for their money and have been unlucky not to come away with a win!
John O'Groats next face Wick Rovers (away) on league duty on Wednesday 3rd July.
