1881 and 1901 censuses
Unique opportunity for one namers
The 3rd of April 1881 and 31st March 1901 are important dates for one-namers in Britain. On those nights a full census was taken of the British population and both are available in processable form, so that it is relatively easy to extract all the entries for a particular surname. On these two occasions in the whole of history we can (in principle, at least) determine the location of every single person called Gumbleton in the whole of Britain.
The broad picture
