Draft history of St Mary's church, Winterbourne Gunner, Wilts, by K P Norris

...In 1466, Thomas Hussey claimed the right to present John Roger to the church. The bishop was suspicious of his claims and set up a Commission of Inquiry. Robert Thatcham, Rector of Boscombe, was president. There were 13 commissioners and they included John Facette, Rector of Cholderton, John Harvey, Vicar of Idmiston, Richard Jones, Curate of Winterbourne Dauntsey, John Harris, rector of Newton Toney and nine laymen. Amongst the latter were Robert Brydale, winterbourne Dauntsey, William Gomeldon of hte same village and Thomas Gomeldon of Porton.

Winterbourne Documents Vol III 'The Callaway Papers'

The following transcriptions wre copied from original documents kindly lent to the society by Messrs. R. White & Son.

In the year 1576, William Gumbledon, Lord of the Manor of Winterbourne Dauntsey, granted to Nicholas Judd on a lease of 5000 years, two cottages and certain lands. Parts of these lands were leased to Edmond Callaway for 99 years, who erected a new house on this leasehold about the year 1660. In 1663, Nicholas Judd by Indenture, granted the new house with garden, orchards and four acres of land in the common fields of Winterbourne Dauntsey to Edmond Callaway fro 4800 years. The enclosure of the common fields took away four acres of land, but hte Callaways, except for short periods, occupied the house for 200 years. At its sale in 1949, the property was converted to freehold.

It is intended to issue uniform with this volume, the documents of the two houses referred to in the original lease of 1576.
