James Lambert Gumbleton was named after one of two painters, both called James Lambert (see http://www.familylambert.net/History/bios/james.html. James Lambert, the elder, had a sister, Susannah Lambert (who was born in 1712 and died in 1769). She was married in 1746 to John Phipps, wheelwright of Cliffe, Lewes. John and Susannah Phipps had a daughter, Susannah Phipps, who was James Lambert Gumbleton's mother. The second painter, James Lambert the younger, was the nephew of the earlier James Lambert.
