| Josiah was born on 27th May 1809 and baptised on 21 Jun of the same year, at Deal, St Leonard's church. At the time his father Robert was a grocer in the town. The next record we have of him is in London, when he appeared as a witness at the Old Bailey on 28 Oct 1830. By this stage, he must have set up a shoe shop in London and it was from this shop that three pairs of shoes had been stolen on 22 Oct 1830. He was married, on 6 Sep 1832, to Lydia REVELL, in Ibstock, Leicestershire. Whether the visit to Ibstock was simply for the marriage or was for a longer period is unknown, but Josiah appears in a London directory of 1833 as a bootmaker, living in Cleveland Street. In the 1841 census he is to be found in East Lane, Walworth, with his wife and four of his children: Lydia, Richard, John and Mary Anne. Ten years later, in the 1851 census, the family (now with six children) are at 4, Tiverton Street, Newington. Lydia, his wife, died on 1 Jan 1863, at which time they were living at 1, Alma Cottages South, Roseberry Place, Dalston, Middlesex. She was buried in Abney Park Cemetery. Josiah remarried on 26 Oct 1864. Surprisingly, his second wife was named Lydia Steele, nee REVELL, a widow aged 44. They were married at St John's, Westminster and Josiah's residence was given as 7, Sloane Street, Chelsea. It is believed that Josiah had dealings with Port of Spain, Trinidad. His son, Josiah and daughters Harriet and ELizabeth were married there in the late 1860s and early 1870s. It is likely that Josiah himself may have died there, as he does not seem to be recorded in the English death records. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
