Harold George Gumbleton was born at 70 South Street, Sebastopool, Monmouthshire and was educated at West Mon School. His first employment was with the Prudential Insurance Company, based in Newport, but he worked from the offices at the home of the area manager at Hill Croft New Inn. He was a member of the Home Guard during WWII. He later became a civil servant and moved to London with his wife Nora Marjorie Kayes and their daughter Kay Patricia. They moved back to New Inn, where they lived at 4, Hill Crest Rd. Harold was a lifelong member of the Masons and, especially after his retirement, took an active part in numerous societies including the Retired Civil Service Society and the Local History Group, writing many articles for the Free Press and local Probas Society.
