Waverton Good Read Children's Award 2012
The Good Read is extending its reach into primary schools by establishing the Waverton Good Read Children's Award. 9 to 11-year-olds in local schools have been invited to judge the best British debut children's novel of the year. In the first year, we created a short list of five books to present to the children in Years 5 and 6 at primary schools in Waverton and Chester. This, and details of the winner (Stephanie Burgis) can be found by clicking here.
The books for 2012, the second year of the award, are listed opposite. There is something for every reader in this year's books: The settings range from Africa, the Scottish Highlands, war-torn London and France, to a run-down English seaside town and various fantasy worlds. The characters include would-be wizards, ghosts and giants, and modern schoolboys and schoolgirls engaging in contemporary issues. The books will be read and reviewed by pupils from years 5 and 6 at Waverton Primary School and Saighton School. The winning author will be invited to meet the children and receive his or her award of £500 (donated by URENCO) in June 2012.
