When and where the
Greengage Plum originated is not known, but it certainly has been
cultivated in France for a very long time. It is said to have been
called by the French "Reine Claude", after Queen Claude,
wife of Francis I (1494-1547). In England it is always known as
Green Gage. It seems probable that in 1724 Sir William Gage was not
the only, or even the first, person who had imported this plum from
France, although it was after him that it was named.
