The Gilera marque was born in 1909 and rapidly established itself as a leading brand, acquiring international recognition during the World Championship series of the fifties. As part of the Piaggio group since 1969, Gilera re-launched the historic dual ring brand and specialised into the production of small and small-to-medium displacement on and off-road machines. Innovations such as the production of the ground breaking 125cc Dual Cylinder Cross motorcycle highlighted the Gilera name again, this time in cross racing. Gileras went on to win the Paris-Dakar rally twice in the eighties, and returned to world championship success in the nineties, winning first place at the 2001 Le Mans Grand Prix. Production was transferred to Pontedera in 1993, from where Gilera began to develop sport scooters such as the Runner, an innovative scooter-motorcycle hybrid. In all, nearly 700,000 Gilera branded vehicles have been produced since 1993.
