Thirty seven starters took off from Edzell on the 2004 Angus
Classic. A regular in the historic rallying calendar which
draws competitors from all over the country, in all types of
vehicles. This years event was slightly different. Caledonian Classic
and Historic Motor sport Club teamed up with the 750 club on the
Saturday for a few tests and an overnight navigational event. I
heard it was very challenging, with a heavy fog descending over most
of the route. The Walker / Thomson team from Dunoon in their Escort
came to grief on leaf covered tightening bend with the wrong camber!
Sunday saw the fog lift just in time for the 0930
start. A fantastic day with blue skies and sunshine bathing the
competitors in the rag tops.
The route took in 11 tests, should have been 12
but one was water logged following heavy rain earlier in the week.
Clatterin Brig test warmed everyone up before the tough climb up the
Cairn O'Mount and on to the Durris Transmitter hill climb. Disaster!
The new radios for the marshals at top and bottom just hadn't enough
puff to work. Nothing to do but abandon the test. Jim McGuiness
however had a brainwave and redesigned the test into a half way up
and back for the return visit as test 10. No complaints from the
competitors so all was saved.
Up to Alford for a series of tests, with a run out
to a nearby sawmill, new for this year, and return for a long blast
round the Alford circuit, 6 tests in all.
Down to Coull farm for what is always a muddy
test. If your car is clean before, it ain't after. Up Durris again,
in the new format, before finishing with a little forest
navigational through Durris forest. As closing car I paid particular
attention to make sure nobody was lost in there before closing and
locking the forest gates. (nobody was).
Apart from a few torn exhausts, particularly the
MGB of Ritchie and Blake which also kept cutting out, we all made it
back to Edzell for a splendid meal at the
Panmure
Arms hotel followed by the prizegiving.
A big thanks to Douglas and June Anderson for
organising this great event. If they can guarantee weather like that
next year the field will easily double.
Look out for Jim McGuiness La Carrera Caledonia
next June 4th and 5th.
