Charterhall- Saturday 3rd April

The KD Grafix/MVR (Leitholm) supported Charterhall Stages Rally was won by the Mitsubishi Evo 6 Lancer of Andy Fenwick/Lee Tindall from Newcastle.  

Lauder’s Jock Threadgall with Kelso co-driver Wullie Mallen finished second, 24 seconds behind, in their Subaru Impreza with the Stocksfield pairing of Michael Glendinning/Andrew Roughead third, a slender five seconds adrift in their similar Impreza.

Glendinning led after the opening 8 mile test, beating the Subaru of Threadgall by five seconds with Graham Redpath  from Duns placed third. A puncture on stage two knocked Glendinning down the order giving Threadgall the rally lead 2 seconds ahead of Fenwick. Stage 3 the lead switched with Fenwick now in the lead and the sick Impreza of Threadgall now second. Fenwick stretched his lead over the three final stages with Threadgall managing to hold on to second on the podium. Graham Redpath/Alistair Young from Duns in the ‘Mill Garage’ Subaru were pushing hard in third place for most of the day trying to catch Threadgall the challenge ended when they sadly retired on the penultimate stage with a blown engine.  

Duns driver Jane Nicol swapped seats in this one to navigate aboard the David Hughes Evo 5 Lancer and was rewarded with 4th place on the final leaderboard and presented with the award for top lady co-driver.

Drive of the day surely went to St Boswells youngster Ryan Borthwick with Gary White on the notes, they finished a highly creditable 6th overall, second in class on the second outing with their Escort Cosworth.

Chirnside’s George Anderson and St Boswells co-driver Johnny Millar took 7th place, third in class, in their immaculate Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 1V.

Nikki Cleland, son of former Touring Car Champion John had secured a late ‘reserve’ place on the entry list and with Neil Weatherly in the co-drivers seat finished 11th overall with their ‘hired’ Subaru Impreza.

Duns partnership of Gary Stevenson/Dale Robertson clinched 14th place in their similar Subaru Impreza.

Craig Curry and John Straughan Jr from Berwick in their 1400 Mk1 Vauxhall Astra won Class 1 by over two minutes and secured 15th place on the overall standings.

Hawick pairing of Barry and Paul Hogg finished 26th overall, 3rd in class 1 in their Suzuki Swift. Brian Middlemas from St Boswells with Melrose co-driver Stuart Bruce scored a good result in their trusty Hillman Avenger, they finished in 29th place and won their class for first historic car home, securing the Richard Paterson Memorial Trophy.

Kelso’s Kevin Dunn and Cameron Fairbairn finished 34th in their ‘KD Grafix’ supported 1300 Nova

Ian Hunter from St Boswells with Keith Richardson in the left hand seat of his ‘St Boswell Mowers’ backed Mini Cooper ‘S’ finished a creditable 36th overall and award for highest placed historic car under 1600cc.

Leitholm’s Doug Logan/Ewan Wilson were 52nd with their ‘MVR Leitholm’ supported Mk 11 Ford Escort.

Ian and Gary Anderson from Innerleithen took 54th place overall in their 1300 Vauxhall Nova.

Carin Logan/Fiona Gourlay from Duns were 63rd in their Anderson (Builders) backed Vauxhall Nova.

Selkirk Team of David Brown and Steven Heatlie took 60th place in their Talbot Sunbeam.

James Lennie from Selkirk with Kelso co-pilot Andy Thompson sadly retired their Escort Cosworth on the opening stage with engine problems.

This popular 45 mile single-venue rally was staged on the perimeter roads of the old wartime airfield and former racing circuit at Charterhall near Greenlaw.

The opening stages were run in almost dry conditions but as the day went on rain came more into play with the penultimate stage completed in torrential conditions.

Organisers, Border Ecosse Car Club, had attracted a quality entry of ninety crews contesting three titles, the Beatson’s Building Supplies Scottish Tarmack Championship, the NE Continious/Techservices North of England Series  and the Anderson (Builders) Scottish Borders Rally Championship.

The Richard Paterson Memorial Trophy and Cup are presented in memory of 22 year old Richard, a member of Hawick and Border Car Club, who was killed on Otterburn Ranges in the 1997 Cheviot Rally, whilst co-driving with Lydia Calder.
The Trophy, donated by Jim and Rona Paterson, is presented to the first Historic crew whilst the Cup, donated by Lydia and Ken Calder, is presented to the first border crew member under 25 years of age.
