| Neil
Turner led Charlie Brown round the 100 mile Teviotdale event
in almost a clean sheet, dropping only 9 minutes in total.
Derek McLean had set a real tricky one for the experts, as
Neil was quick to point out as he collected the silver at the
end. "There was plenty of paper and other distractions to
frustrate and confuse the top crews, a clever idea that
worked!"
The Browns were in force in the
Expert class with Charlie taking Neil round, Nairn (normally
seen in an historic Sunbeam) driving his new BMW 5 Series
estate with Stuart Naylor at the maps, and Charles Brown map
reading for local member Neil Morrison, cramped up in Neils
Mk2 Sprite.
HCC members Radin and Watson
again showed their skills, but not quite sharp enough to steal
top prize, having to settle for second place, 7 penalties
behind the leaders. Irishman Olly McOllom and Euan Brodie
ended fourth overall, losing out to Neil Morrison when they
missed TC13.
The first couple of sections
were cleaned by most crews, though a code board between TC2
and TC3 caused a lot of confusion. Old reg plates were being
used, and would you believe it someone had screwed their old
plate on to a fencepost, not far from our code. Some noted it,
other not. Neil Morrison saw it but didn't note it. A good
challenge at the results moved him up from 4th to 3rd, so it
goes to show, always challenge if you think there is something
wrong.
By the end of the first section
to TC11 Brown and Turner were the only crew clean. A novice
and Clubman non ex had got lost and one non ex crew failed to
start! Historic crew Middlemas and Rae in the roaring red
Avenger had only dropped 7 minutes, so were up there with the
experts in terms of time.
The second section started the
head scratching. Corr and Cowan piled on the points as they
cut and run, as did Parry and Craven, both in the non Ex
class. Millar and Hepburn in the Experts were also feeling the
strain and Stuart Naylor did not like Nairn's BMW, falling
sick in the section and forcing a retiral. The clubman experts
Whittaker and Tynan who had also cleaned the first section cut
and run TC13 but still kept ahead of their class rivals Gibson
and Holdsworth.
Lloyd and Carruthers joined
their class mates Cheetham and Harwood for an early bath in
the Novice class, leaving the Jackson's father and daughter
team to take the class prize with only 83 penalties.

20 Crews entered
the 2002 Teviotdale, cancelled last year due to foot and
mouth. Organiser Derek McLean managed to salvage much of last
years proposed route, which started at its usual spot at Adam
Purves garage in Melrose and finished at Ettrickbridge village
hall.

EUMSC Parry
& Craven
A feature of
this years event was a section timed to the second. Since
these cannot be run before midnight, the event start was set
at 2100 for the first car.

Morrison &
Brown
A good turnout
as usual from the EUMSC helped swell the numbers, but a few
crews from Inverness, and the West of Scotland joined to make
an exciting event.
