Ewan Leeming navigated Stuart Bruce round the twisting and
slippy border roads to take the winning position at the 2003
Teviotdale rally, with only 22 penalties on the night.
Following a shaky start when the pair dropped a couple of
minutes at the first TC they got into the swing, making 5 points
total by the end of the first leg. Not good enough though to
keep ahead of last years winners Neil Turner and Charlie Brown
who dropped only one point at TC5. Meanwhile the third entrant
in the Nat B experts, Angharad Parry and Iain Craven dropped
time to TC5 and lost the codes to TC6 from which they would not
recover to better 3rd on the day.
Leg 2 was a tricky one in the last section to TC14. No less
than 4 codes to collect was just asking for at least one to be
dropped. Turner and Brown missed two, while Leeming and Bruce
found them all. Even arriving 15 minutes late at the final
control TC14 put them 12 points in the lead.
Could they keep it up on the final leg. Two minutes dropped
at the first control TC15 was a bad omen but Ewan kept his
cool and cleaned the rest of the leg. Turner and Brown were
not so lucky dropping 7 on the leg giving a final score of 39
v 22 for our local hero's.
The Nat B non experts Neil
Morrison and Ronnie Taylor fought it out with Douglas Smith
and Jenny Hunt, Jenny guided Douglas losing only 5 minuyes on
the first leg, while Ronnie
and Neil dropped a few minutes at most controls ending 23 at
leg end. It got worse as the pair missed a pile of codes to
TC11, though Smith/Hunt nearly joined them at TC14 with a
couple of codes. Fairly even on the final leg giving the class
win to Smith/Hunt 36 to 74.
Five Nat B novices battled it
out with Hall/King and Soppit/Clark failing to reach the end.
Lloyd/McCondochie took the class 36 points clear of
Maxwell/Maxwell with the Shanks duo coming in with 144.
In the Clubman class only one
expert, Whiitacker/Tynan made it to the end.
There was a real cliff hanger
in the non ex class, with Pearson family battling it out with
Weir and Tulloch and Burns/Symonds. The end of leg 1 had
Burns/Symonds in control, 3 points ahead of the Pearson. Leg 2
was cleaned by Weir/Tulloch, whilst the Pearson's racked up
another 11 points. Burns/Symonds dropped a couple of codes
from which they would not recover. Getting close, with the
Pearsons now in the lead by 7 points. TC15 and 16 saw
the Pearson's lose another couple of points while Weir/Tulloch
really concentrated to clean the leg. However the cool Robbie
Pearson took a family win by 5 points from Weir/Tulloch.
The Clubman Historics also had
an exciting time. Club members Peter and Dougie Humphries got
lost in Gala and slid off later on the damp roads. Young
Dougie at 14 was doing a good job for his age but after the
"off" it was decided to retire and drive home. Meanwhile
Bankier/Gilbert in the Riley Elf won leg 1 by a single point
over Walker and Hewitt in the Mk1 Escort. By the end of leg 2
the two teams were even on 21 points. All down to the last leg
again, but this time Walker and Hewitt cleaned to finish 8
points ahead of the Elf crew.

Crews entered the 2003 Teviotdale. Starting at John Clelands
Volvo garage in Galashiels this years event took competitors
on a 97 mile run round the border roads. National B and
Clubman classes made for a busy results sheet once expert, non
ex and novices were included. Four historics also joined the
event.

Whittaker & Tynan
As with last
year there was a section timed to the second, to be used in
the event of a tie break. Since these cannot be run before
midnight, the event start was set at 2131 for the first car.

Lloyd and McCondochie
The usual good turnout from the EUMSC helped swell the numbers, but a few
crews from the North East Hadrian club, and the West of Scotland joined to make
an exciting event.

Pearson
family
Three legs and 21 TC's with no less than 34 code boards tested
the competitors on their way to the finish at Stow.
