RE: Proposed Theatre Project
Dear Community members,
Following our telephone conversation on Saturday 26th of July (and Sunday
7th of September), we are writing to formally ask the community of Steward
Community Woodland to consider our proposal for creating a theatre project
engaging the land and it's community.
WHO ARE WE?
Eve Houston (24yrs) and Natasha Machin (24yrs)
Two final year theatre degree students from Dartington College of Arts,
who are both committed to pursuing a life that impacts the earth as little
as possible and when it does make an impact to do so with creativity,
sensitivity and with respect.
WHY?
To fulfil the requirements of our course 'Contextual Enquiry Project'
And to explore the possibilities of living ecologically sustainable lives
as theatre artists.
WHAT?
The project will be about the land, about the community, for the land
and for the community, immediate and wider.
We want this project to benefit the land and the community as well as
to aid us in our exploration of theatre and performance.
To learn more about how to live sustainably using methods such as permaculture,
biodiversity, biodynamics and ecological footprints.
HOW?
Working organically, developing and creating performance in response to
our environment and aspects of its context..
We'd like to work toward an objective, devised together with the community
as a question.
We want to explore how we can use performance and performance methods
to fulfil your/our objectives and how we can facilitate the creation of
art in harmony with the land and its community.
WHEN?
The course requires us to work on this project for a minimum of 6 weeks
between and including October and December 2003. We will be assessed by
tutors from a presentation we give them in the week before Christmas vacation
at college.
WHERE do we go from here?
We would like to come and meet you all as soon as possible, to visit the
land, muck in with any daily living tasks and talk to find common objectives,
get a sense for the land and ethos of the community.
We would like to discuss how much time and energy can we exchange, i.e.
us working on the land, harvesting, digging etc. and the community engaging
with us and our common decided objective for the theatre project.
Please could you get in touch with us so that we can arrange a time to
come and meet with the land and the community, we will of course telephone
you if we have not heard from you within the next few days.
Thank you very much for your time and attention to our proposal. I hope
we can make this project a success for all who are involved and affected.
Yours Sincerely
Eve Houston
and Natasha Machin
