Why are we doing this project?

Because of who we are. Our philosophies and politics influence the nature of the work we want to engage in.

Why have we chosen to do our project at Steward Community Woodland?
  • We want to learn how artists can live and work sustainably.
  • Because we are interested in the relationship between art and ecology.
To find a way to reconnect with nature through mediums of artistic expression.
  • We want to know how the community affect our art practices and how our art practice influences the community.
  • We want to be there because of the philosophies of the Community.

Why have we chosen to attempt a site-specific project?

To fully understand a context as artists we need to investigate its intricacies, the "site-specific" process and methods make this possible.

The members of the Community work and live on the site and live out the possibilities that emerge whenever people work in the place in which they live. We want to do this too.

Additionally, in this case they have intentionally designed their community so that its members can live in this particular way. It is especially interesting for us to engage with a physical environment and its community built with the purpose of sharing and living out the practice of its philosophy.

Making the work "site specific" opens up the endless possibilities of asking questions about our relationship with our landscape. This mirrors the way in which they have deconstructed the conventions of society; questioned the components and reconstructed their own sustainable conventions.

In turn we are in the process of deconstructing and reconstructing the conventions of the Community into an artistic framework. We are doing this because the medium of art acts as a channel of communication to a wider audience.
