BRISTOLCON IS ON!
Bristol's premiere Sci-fi and fantasy convention / Serenity-themed shindig is now confirmed.
WHEN? - Saturday September 26th, 2009, 2.30pm - 1am
WHERE? - The Mercure Holland Hotel and Spa, Bristol, UK
HOW DO I GET THERE? - The hotel has a handy map here :
http://www.mercure.com/gb/hotel-6698-mercure-holland-house-hotel-spa-bristol/location.shtml
Temple Meads Station is about ten minutes walk, as is the coach station (in the opposite direction), and there are lots of buses and bike parking about. There are also plenty of places to stay in Bristol, the local YHA is only five minutes walk!
WHAT'S GOING ON? - You're asking ME that?
The convention opens at 2.30. From 2.30-5pm (approx) there will be a number of panels hosted by local SF and Fantasy luminaries, and some not-so-local. Plenty of scope for audience interaction and/or drunken argy-bargy.
The following people are scheduled to appear on panels :
Jim Mortimore - Writer of Episodes of "Cracker" and "Doctor Who". Sometimes mistaken for human.
Nick Walters - author of Doctor Who Magazine award winning novel "Reckless Engineering". Loves The Fall.
Joanne Hall (yes, me!) - Author of the "New Kingdom Trilogy" and silly short stories about Barbarian Heroes.
Gareth L Powell - Author of "The Last Reef"; very popular with Interzone readers.
Kim Lakin-Smith - Author of "Tourniquet", fan of the Dark Stuff!
Fran Jacobs - Author of "The Shadow Seer" and cat-lover.
Cheryl Myfanwy Morgan - Global traveller. Her non-fiction articles have appeared in Locus, Interzone, IROSF and Strange Horizons.
John Hawkes-Reed - "The Guerrilla Infrastructure HOWTO" appeared in Future Bristol. Trying to grow tractors from seed.
Andy Bigwood will also be displaying his BSFA award-winning artwork. Be warned, where Andy travels, disaster often follows!
AND IN THE EVENING?
After the panels have concluded, there will be a short break for food and drinking. The evening's entertainment will be a performance by Carnaby Street (60's covers band), a disco, a professional photographer wandering about who will be able to sell you prints of yourself in your beautiful Serenity-themed getup, and an auction of SF themed goodies. All profits go to "Equality Now", a charity set up to provide education and Emancipation to women in the Third World. The "Equality Now" website can be found at : http://www.equalitynow.org
SOUNDS GREAT. WHERE CAN I GET A TICKET?
Tickets cost £20 and are available from www.kumara.org.uk . You can pay via Paypal, or with a cheque if you're in the UK. There will be tickets on the door for anyone who decides to come at the last minute.
Now, pay attention, cos this gets complicated.
Tickets for PANELS AND EVENING CEILIDH cost £20 and can be obtained via the Kumara website.
Tickets for the CEILIDH ONLY cost £20, and can be obtained via the Kumara website.
So, if you buy a Ceilidh ticket, you get free entry to the panels!
HMM, YOU MIGHT NEED SOME HELP HERE... HOW DO I GET MORE INVOLVED?
Email hierath@hotmail.com. If you're a dealer, let us know and we can include a table in the price of your £20 ticket, although places are limited, so it's first come first served. If you'd like to appear on a panel, we still have some slots available. Just tell me what you want to do and I'll see if we can accommodate you!
