So this is me.....
| Time for a change of photo, to one that was
taken slightly more recently than eight years ago. This is me in the
Pit. I look as if I'm working hard, but probably actually playing
Scrabble on Facebook (I'm on Facebook, come and make friends with
me!) So, about me. I live in Bristol with my boyfriend, and I write. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. What Terry Pratchett says about living behind a keyboard is true. It's hard to have a life when the one inside your head is so much more interesting (Boyfriend is a little offended by that last comment!) For those who really need to know, I decided I was going to be a writer when I was six, having gone through astronaut, train driver, and Luke Skywalker's girlfriend. The New Kingdom Trilogy has been rattling around my head in various forms since I was about nine, getting progressively more bloodthirsty and complicated until it became the beast it is now. I actually first put serious finger to keyboard about five years ago, having written for Venue in Bristol and spent about four years running a Manic Street Preachers fanzine, where I honed my typing skills and received the occasional death threat. Which was nice. In my spare time (yeah right!) I like reading and going to gigs and the cinema. |

INTERVIEWS There have been a few of these recently. Some of them are quite similar, but I'm always happy to do them if anyone feels like asking. Just drop me an email ( hierath@btinternet.com ) and I'll be happy to do it. http://www.theinkslinger.net/interviews.html - the site belongs to my wonderful editor, Donna Sundblad, and is worth a browse when you get there. www.epress-online.com/joannehall.htm - this is the Epress homepage, where I have my own little section. The same interview can also be found at http://www.bloglines.com/blog/ciwstudy and http://www.blogcritics.org under books, thanks to Parker Owens for these. ETERNAL NIGHT have an interview and bio, which can be found at http://www.eternalnight.co.uk/interviews/2005/halljoanne.html and http://www.eternalnight.co.uk/books/h/halljoanne.html respectively. They have a lot of other authors on their site worth checking out too, have a wander! http://www.authorsden.com/joannehall - Another little profile. You'll notice I only have one picture of my that I consider suitable for public consumption... And finally, a big thank you to Rochita from THE SWORD REVIEW, who is very friendly and sweet. The interview I did with her can be found at http://www.theswordreview.com/columns.php?sub_id=93, and the site is well worth checking out too!
NOVELS "Hierath" - http://www.lulu.com/content/463033 "In Exile" - http://www.lulu.com/content/596438 "The Eagle of the Kingdom" - http://www.lulu.com/content/1405809
STORIES Getting quite a few of these now too! Most recent first: "The Company of Women" - Sorcerous Signals, February 2008 http://www.sorceroussignals.com/ An Elvienne story, set about two centuries before "Hierath". Elvienne leads the legendary last charge of the Telesian warrior-women, but the reality and the legend don't quite tally...
"The Silver Ring" - Drabblecast, January 2008 http://web.mac.com/normsherman/iWeb/Site/Podcast/Podcast.html My first Podcast, and a fishy fairy tale.
"The Ship Breaker's Daughter" - The Opinion Guy, January 2008 http://theopinionguy.com/page2.html Rina struggles to deal with her mysterious, seductive, power. Another New Kingdom story, set a few years after the conclusion of "Eagle".
"To Please the Gods" - The Harrow, January 2008 http://www.theharrow.com/journal/index.php/journal/issue/view/63 A sickness threatens the River Village, and it's up to Healer Ecatzin to plead with the priests for salvation.
"The Unicorn Problem" - Afterburn SF, December 2007 A racy comedy with added unicorns, and a cameo appearance from Nomi, landlady of the Mouse on the Table.
"Where the Roses Grow" - Art and Prose, October 2007 A creepy little story about invisible friends, and rose bushes with a mind of their own.
"The Butter-Knife Samurai" - Art and Prose. www.artandprose.com - Issue 1 A Real Barbarian Heroes story, which sees Hoff venturing into exotic lands and being asked to throw a fight.
"Constantia's Office" - From the Asylum http://fromtheasylum.com/interior2.htm This is a new twist on Wicked Stepmothers, and may explain why they get such lousy press... The story will be published in paperback in From The Asylum's annual anthology in August 2008, but in the meantime it's free to read here. And while you're there check out "Progress", by Lindsey Duncan, in the April Issue.
"Hero Takes a Fall" (Reprint) - Daikaijuzine You know this story, but you've never seen it told this way before... An old story for a brand new mag.
"Candlefire" - Afterburn SF Rosleen is to be burned at the White Tree. Can Elvienne's magic and the spirit of her mother save her?
"The Feline Queen" - Quantum Muse http://www.quantummuse.com/may06_feline.html More Hoff, this time getting involved with beautiful six-breasted cat women who don't quite conform to the fantasy stereotype...
"The Caves Of Otrecht" - Quantum Muse http://www.quantummuse.com/fantasy_stories.html A Real Barbarian Heroes story featuring Chosen Ones, a magic sword, and a variety of party nibbles
"The Last of a Million Wishes" - Irish Fantasy Quarterly http://www.irishfantasyquarterly.com/Lastofamillion-joannehall.html or at www.lulu.com Twisted little fairy story!
"Hero Takes a Fall" - Quantum Muse http://www.quantummuse.com/sept05_hero.html The first Real Barbarian Heroes story, introducing the hapless Hoff. In no way related to Conan, not nohow...
"The Woods of Ekaterinburg" - Leafing Through Issue Five http://www.gorlan.co.uk/contents5.php Historical fiction set during the Russian revolution.
Some of these stories are no longer available, and I hope to add them to the archive section in the future.
ARTICLES A new venture for me. I've only written two so far! "A Quick Guide to Fantasy World-Building" - Art and Prose "A Reality Check for Writers" - Art and Prose Both can be found at www.artandprose.com
