Originally formed in 1980 the North West Mountain Rescue Team today has 32 active members.

The North West team covers Co.Fermanagh and the Sperrin Mountains from Coleraine in the north east to Omagh in the south west.

The team also provides backup cover in the Donegal mountains and assists in any incident reported on the Antrim plateau.

The team is based in Derry City where it has a rescue station. In recent years there has been an increasing interest from young people and the team has an active training program and a Youth Development Policy.

Before you set off on foot to explore Glenshane or the Sperrins here's some advice from The North West Mountain Rescue Team.

IF YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT IN THE HILLS
1. Stay calm & keep the casualty warm.

2. Send at least two members of your party to get help.

3. Dial 999 and ask for MOUNTAIN RESCUE.

4. Tell the operator:

  • WHAT has happened.
  • WHERE it has happened.
  • WHEN it happened.
  • WHO it happened to.
  • WHERE you are.

5. Then STAY where you are until the emergency services meet you, they will want to talk to you.
