Packaging

I'm sitting here in front of my computer and am surrounded by DVD's, CD's (double and single packets, fat and thin, it doesn't take a genius to measure a few and look at them. If you design a media storage holder to house all the different types it would be more useful and MULTI-PURPOSE.

What is the point of the cover? The obvious answer is to protect the product. Next you notice the paper insert which is slipped under the plastic jacket. You got it, it tells you what is inside the box cover. It might also give you a bit of information as to how the contents are loaded or used, or copyright information. Usually the paper bit attracts your attention, its colourful and gives you information without being too fussy. Too fussy and you can't be bothered to read it. Not  fussy enough and you find it boring. The cover needs to strike a balance between the two.

The picture should indicate the contents, exciting game, office software etc.

How might the cover be made, almost certainly injection moulding, any shape which is complicated has usually been injection moulded. The thin see through sleeve on the outside has probably been attached using a hot weld and is made by a process called calendering which to you and me is rolling plastic into thin sheets. Click on the links below to see what you need to see.

Don't forget, if it's a complicated shape think injection moulding!
