Where did the picture go? I'm sorry I had to remove it because AQA made me. It was a picture of two striped blue deckchairs on a beach. Use your imagination, I know you can do it. Oh I do like to be beside the sea side (Sorry couldn't help it). Its a Deck chair. It is almost certainly made from BEECH (not the same spelling as the sandy stuff which is BEACH) beech is very hard and strong for supporting weight. It is very close grained. Look how it works below.
This is the classic deck chair mechanism. Don't forget on your preparation sheet is suggests you look at mechanisms. (You will find mechanisms here). Well this is one. It is a linkage system. The three pieces of wood are connected together using coach bolts. The rail showing the arrow pulls in and out of little grooves at the back so the chair can be adjusted to make it more or less upright depending what you like as a sitting position. Yep, also a mechanism. It is also a linkage. This time it has an extra piece to make the chair have an arm. It also is fixed together using coach bolts which have been galvanised (Galvanising is steel coated with Zinc to stop it rusting). See a coach bolt take a look here. Material certainly beech. What joints do you think the chair is made from? Mortise and tenon.
