Pedal Bins

This bin is made of steel which has been painted probably using an epoxy paint, that has been sprayed on using a process called powder coating. Click here for an explanation on powder coating. It has to be painted because steel goes rusty if not treated. It has a linkage system for opening the lid like the one drawn here (go on then click). This shows quite a complicated mechanism. If you are asked to draw one in the test I would look at these other two (I am waiting for you to go there) Mechanism 1, Mechanism 2. Oh! by the way the pedal is made of plastic (if it was made of painted steel it would quickly wear off the paint and go rusty).

This little beauty shows the bin liner which is also made of steel but it has been galvanised to stop it rusting. Galvanising is coating the steel with a rust proof metal (in the case of galvanising it is zinc. Click here for other methods of finishing materials. CLICK. How do you think the handle is held on, probably by riveting as shown here CLICK. The casing could have been spot welded click here to see CLICK.

This bin is made of steel which has been powder coated. Other pedal bins could be made from plastic (such as Polyethylene), or stainless steel (stainless doesn't rust so all you need to do is polish it as a finish). Click here to see types of plastic, click here to see types of metal.
