Hertfordshire Organic Gardeners (HOGs) was formed in the autumn of 1991. Its purpose is to encourage
the residents of Hertfordshire to garden and farm without chemicals in harmony with the
natural process.
We are the local group of Garden Organic,[previously known as the Henry Doubleday Research
Association (HDRA)] which promotes, and carries out research into, Organic
gardening methods. We are also affiliated to the Soil Association, which sets standards for Organic agriculture.
What do we do?
- Tell people about Organic gardening & agriculture and encourage them to participate.
- Hold regular monthly meetings on the fourth Thursday of the month (except July,
August and December) with guest speakers.
- Provide a member's newsletter four times a year.
- Visit members gardens.
- Run stalls at local events, shows and fairs all over the County; selling books,
leaflets, plants and seeds. We discuss gardening and farming problems with the attendees.
- Organise visits to places of interest.
- Our members take part in the national Organic Gardening Weekends, which are
organised by Garden Organic and held in June and August every year.
