The railway that isn't there... by Ron Evers

Round the turn of the century railways in Britain were probably the pride and admiration of all, and the steam locomotive captured the imagination of most boys, whatever their age in this, its most glamorous era. Robert Walker, son of Sir James Walker, 3rd baronet, of Sand Hutton, born in 1890, was no exception, and having the means and wherewithal soon had his own model railway on a 4" gauge track which ran on trestles fixed to the railings around the Hall. No trace of this exists, although I did have given to me as a small boy a length of the track on which I ran trucks constructed of mecanno.
