The railway that isn't there... by Ron Evers |

This line was a great feature of Sand Hutton village life. At the many garden parties given by Sir Robert it was in great demand, various bodies from York, cyclists clubs etc were invited out and the highlight was a run along the full length of the line and back, which was a great thrill. Very often too, the Sunday School children were given a ride after Sunday School, which no doubt helped to make the Sand Hutton Sunday School a well-attended one.
I myself have faint memories of riding in an open coach. The only thing was, this was a real steam-driven loco, and had the unfortunate but necessary habit of puffing smoke and steam from its funnel, and as it was not very high and the coaches were open, ladies became very aware of the colour of their dresses, and soon found out which ones were the best for the trips.
