But as the line progressed it became obvious something larger would be needed. A standard gauge would be far too costly, but just at that moment the problem was answered for Sir Robert because the whole of the locos, rolling stock etc at a Government War Dept meat depot in Deptford was put up for sale. This was 18" gauge and the Sand Hutton line was altered to this, Synolda was put up for sale and three of the Department locos appeared in its place. These were built by the Hunslet Engineering Company and although not so handsome as Synolda were remarkably powerful, and with their brown livery, polished copper and brass, looked quite attractive.
