The Burundian Wedding
* Saturday 14th September 2002 *

During my most recent work trip with Oxfam to Burundi (Central Africa) I was lucky enough to attend a Burundian wedding. Great fun it was too.

The happy couple.

Photo taken by HR who leapt out into the path of the happy couple to take this snap. They were extremely surprised I can tell you!

The wedding was a Catholic wedding spoken in Kurundi (the local language of Burundi) and so I didn't have a clue what was going on, but it was all very interesting.

Post ceremony the couple and the family & friends head to a second complex for the reception. Free beer is passed round. Nice one.

Traditional dancing then takes place by two groups of local kids. Two of the boys group can be seen above in traditional attire greeting the happy couple. 5 cows and a goat are offered by the guest (sadly not literally) plus several wrapped presents which I assume are toasters etc.

After the reception a group of us head towards a local restaurant for some local food and local beer (Amstel).

Then we go to a disco to dance the night away. Not sure why Liz is showing us her right eye, maybe it's some secret Kenyan sign? Also in the photo are Mary Rose and Blaise, both Burundian's and Leo an ex-Oxfam Kenyan

Congrats to the happy couple and I wish you many many many happy years together.

Bon chance.

Other snaps from my Burundian trip...........

On the beach by Lake Tanganyika with Liz and Lauren Hill

The Red Cross plane that flew us to Gitega, Burundi's second city. Where I found out that there had been a 173 people massacre several days before my arrival. I only found this out when I had returned to the capital.

Having dinner with Mary Rose and her family.

Its quite overwhelming how hospitable the Burundian people are and how great their cooking is!
Despite the country being at war with ethnic violence, a 11pm curfew and the sound of gun-fire and explosions at night, people try to get on with life as best they can.

Previous Oxfam trips have taken me to Pakistan, DR Congo, Glasgow and East Timor. Next? Well the current plan has me down for Afghanistan.................
