I am researching the history of the Howitt Family from Aberdeen in Scotland. My current research indicates that the family name was evident in Aberdeen as far back as the fifteenth Century. To date I have traced my own family line back to the early 1700s in the parish of Old Machar, Aberdeen. During the 1800s the Howitts were almost without exception Carters in the granite quarries - this is illustrated on the background picture. At the turn of the Century, following the loss of their stock of horses, their Carting business came to an end and the family who at that time were mainly living in the Woodside area started to move away from Aberdeen. Some moved to Govan in Glasgow to find work in the shipyards and some emigrated to Ontario in Canada and New York in the USA.
If any of this seems to be familiar to you or if you have any information about early or current Howitts I would be pleased to hear from you.
