Story Starter One:

The bear was hungry.  She saw some juicy red berries on a bush that made her tummy growl. The snow crunched under her paws as she walked.  She hated winter!

Story Starter Two:
The grey triangle cut through the water, getting closer and closer. It was a shark!

Ages 9 - 12
Story Starter One:

The wind plucked at her hair viciously.  She had never known it to be this cold before.  She could barely feel her toes.  What was going on?
Story Starter Two:
The growling was getting closer. David's head swung from side to side, trying to find the source of the noise. It was too dark to see properly.

Ages 12 - 16
Story Starter One:
Kath swung her legs aimlessly as she sat on the rock. She could hear families strolling on the Pier above her, and if she looked up she could see flashes of colour through the wooden slats. Last year, she loved it up there - the dogems; the doughnuts, slippery with hot grease and sugar. But this year, she preferred it down here where it was darker.
Story Starter Two:
The house was in darkness. John was nervous. He'd come on a dare, and couldn't back down. Not with Ben and Chris watching. It was just an empty old house, after all...

There will be a winner and runner up in each category.

There is no word limit - but don't think that the longer the story, the better it will be!

Your story should be sent in the body of an email - NOT as an attachment.

Send your entries to: hugginscooper@btopenworld.com

Read your story carefully to yourself and make sure you have used really descriptive vocabulary. It sounds obvious, but make sure the story has a beginning, middle and end. Look at the writing activities section on this site to give you some ideas about planning and characters.

Choose the story starter that grabs your imagination - and get scribbling!

Remember, the closing date for the Winter Competition is 20th February 2003!
