Butterfly Conservation

If you had been alive a hundred years ago, and went for a summer's walk in the countryside, you would have expected to see a wealth of butterflies. Today, their numbers have declined seriously and five of our 59 resident species have become extinct. The future of nearly half our remaining species hangs in the balance as they continue to decline in many areas. Moths (the largely nocturnal cousins of butterflies) have also disappeared at an alarming rate and over 50 of our 900 larger species are now highly threatened.

Frogs and Toads, Part of the "Kids Ark" Website

This is a site designed for children and partly by children. The site in some ways comes out of our own frustration with many existing children's sites. We wanted to create a site which would open children's eyes to the world and the many cultures within it and offer a unique opportunity for children to be active participants in the process. As parents we wanted our site's young visitors to not just sit in front of the screen, but inspired by what they find there to go out and do things and then come back to the computer to share their experiences with others.

David Calcutt - Poet, Storyteller and Playwright

David Calcutt has written many plays for the theatre and radio, including original works and adaptations of novels. Several of his plays for young people have been published by Nelson Thornes, Oxford University Press, Heinemann, and Faber.
He has also written and directed several large-scale community plays and worked extensively as a storyteller. David lives in Walsall in the West Midlands, and his Millennium Play for the town, Walsall Wakes, was performed at the Dome in Greenwich.

British Dragonfly Society Website

Dragonflies are among the most ancient of living creatures. Fossil records, clearly recognisable as dragonflies, go back to Carboniferous times which means that they date back almost 300 million years, predating pterodactyls by 100 million years and birds by some 150 million. It would he tragic if, after surviving such an unimaginable number of years, it should be our generation that witnesses the decline of these fascinating and beautiful insects.
