CASTLEREAGH

Shirin Jamshidi recently returned to Castlereagh community from a period of service at the House of Worship near Sydney, Australia, was featured in a half page spread in the East Belfast Observer. The journalist reported all the details of Shirin’s service in Australia, which included gardening, and co-ordinating year of service projects for young people leaving Australia. Further, she highlighted the main tenets of the faith as outlined by Shirin, ‘We believe in one planet and one people. We don’t see others as being different.’ This was an extremely positive report.

LONDONDERRY

The last in the current series of “Deepenings in Derry” on Hands of the Cause of God took place in the Bahá'í Centre on 17 June, when Claire Greenberg spoke about William Sears. She had personal knowledge of Mr Sears and his wife Marguerite and had stayed at their home on a number of occasions, and was able to give an insight into his life and service as an indefatigable traveller and speaker, always entertaining and inspiring, as well as the author of a number of now-standard Bahá'í books including “Thief in the Night” and “Release the Sun”.

The meeting also heard part of a taped talk given by Mr Sears.

On 23 June Michelle O'Mahony and Lawrence McMinn, representing the Spiritual Assembly, met with Councillor Lynn Fleming, the newly-elected Mayor of Derry. This took place in the city's historic Guildhall and lasted over half an hour. The Mayor was presented with literature and asked a number of interested questions about the Faith and the community, and the Assembly representatives felt it was a very positive meeting.

“Derry Bahá'í community—small but going strong” was the heading for a full-page article in the Derry News on 16 June. The feature dealt with the teachings of the Faith, what it has to offer Northern Ireland and the world, and the activities of the local Bahá'í community, and included photographs, one of them of the Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh.

A journalist from the newspaper approached the Bahá'ís with a view to writing the feature after he received a copy of the new statement on Faith-Based Schools by the National Spiritual Assembly. This was a welcome spin-off from the distribution of this statement undertaken by the LSA: the Assembly felt that it was a valuable resource, making a number of important points.
